Sounds like the situation is being hyped way above what it should be - drunk passenger demanding stuff and being violent. Doesnt sound like a hijacking to me, just a drunk idiot. Hit him, land the plane and deal with it.

As per local media hijacker was drunk russion passenger and had fight with two other on board of the aircraft. Lately he was picified by other passengers and plane safely landed in PRG. Hijacker was handed over to Czech authorities and plane is right now standing near rwy 31. Check of the cabin and holds is performed right now and after assurance nothing dangerous is on board, plane will be released for Geneva.

That is great! If we actually practiced this approach to drunken idiots there would probably less of them. ?? ?? ??

The culprit was foiled on board the plane, meaning he was pacified

He added that this had not resulted in any damage to the man's health.

I just read the above. Boy, they must have beat the hell out of him. That will probably be the last time he gets drunk and acts up.  Smile

Served him right, seen too much of this c***p on some international vacation destinations, when people get booze at cheap prices or free, they behave like right idiots. I say throw them off the flight in mid air if necessary. Had a chap one on a flight to MIA that got drunk and tried to force his way into First Class, the pilot came out of the cockpit and told him that if he didn't behave himself he was going to throw him out the window. The idiot believed him and went back to his Y seat and behaved himself for the rest of the flight, I guess it takes a tough stand with these people. Can't understand drunken idiots on board, they are a mernace not only to themselves but to the rest of the flight

So the hijacker was 32 years old , I don t want to call him Mr., Dagaev and accoring local police president, he wanted the pilot to change the route to Africa, Cairo. Is it only my feeling that recently a lot of similar incidents is coming from russian or ex russian passengers. If there is somebody caught smoking in the toilet during the flight on the way to PRG from TLV, than it is ALWAYS ex russian isareli.

This snippet taken from the BBC link states that..

'Czech police described the incident as an attempted hijacking, but Aeroflot said it was a case of "hooliganism".'

Just a 'piss-head' having a go. So, nothing new here then. Wodka anybody?

Exaggeration.

This says:

Quote:
The preliminary version is that this was a case of hooliganism

The definition of hijack is; the seizure of a vehicle in transit either to rob it or divert it to an alternate destination. This did not happen.

...no hijacking...no drunk man...but a drunk man trying to hijack a plane!!!

He indeed attempted to get in the cockpit to force the crew to turn to Egypt, but was stopped by other passengers and cabin crew members and moreover he declared to have an explosive device with him.

He was travelling with his family of eight, including three small children.

Russian Plane "Hijacked" By Drunken Passenger

Fri Dec 29, 2006 2:47 am

I was on a UA flight from FRA to IAD last year when the purser (who remembered me from a previous flight) asked if I could help them with a problem. She explained that three Russian men in Y had been serving themselves from their own bottle and that they pretended not to understand English and wouldn't let a female FA take the bottle. So, she sent both the male FAs on duty to take the bottle, which they succeeded in doing. A while later, they broke out another bottle. She asked if I would explain in Russian the rule against self-serving alcohol. So, she and I walked back to Y and I explained the rule, told them that in the future they could give their unopened bottle to a FA and ask that they be served from their own bottle, that if they asked nicely the request might be granted, that for this flight it was way too late to ask for any such favors, that if they made the least bit of further trouble the FBI would be waiting for them upon landing and that, at a minimum, they would be barred from entering the States for five years. The senior one made some excuses about not knowing, apologized, and promised there would be no further trouble. There wasn't any more trouble.

http://www.echo.msk.ru/interview/48563/

This is a radio interview with the purser. After some preliminaries, the recounting of the incident starts with a drunk man from economy class speaking rudely to a stewardess. The man was so drunk that the crew couldn't understand everything he was trying to say. The passenger tried to enter the cockpit, so the purser had a talk with him. The passenger wanted to go to Egypt and the purser asked the passenger to sit for a while and think about it, and then they would decide together where to go. The purser told the captain that the situation was under control. Then the passenger stood again and became agressive. He tried unsuccessfully to open the reinforced cockpit door and then began to beat a crew member. The purser turned to some passengers, some of whom were employees on vacation. Then there is a strange account of attempted strangulation, emerging from the toilet with a small girl, beating a woman, etc. Much violence ensues before four men subdue him.

It later became apparent that he was travelling with relatives when his wife told the purser that her husband is schizophrenic. The purser doesn't understand how the family of 8 could all claim to have seen nothing. The wife told the purser that if they had seen how he had been, they would have stopped him. The purser told the wife: Don't talk nonsense, you saw everything because he was yelling throughout the cabin before the violence started.

Then a brief discussion of measures taken after landing to ensure the aircraft is safe, then finally a brief discussion of how the crew feels about it. The purser is very matter of fact about it, saying "these things happen" and "it's our job."

Quoting Motopolitico (Reply 32):
Did the purser tell you to say the part about the FBI or did you add that in yourself???

I don't remember for sure, but I think it was my idea and I checked with her first. She wasn't too specific about what exactly she wanted said and left me a lot of discretion. She seemed to have the good sense to realize that the right thing to say depended on cultural naunces that were beyond her.

Quoting Motopolitico (Reply 32):
Well done at any rate!

Thank you for the kind words. I was glad that I was able to help. I told the purser that she should have asked for my help at the beginning of the incident.

I know in America you aren't "supposed" to get on a plane while drunk but I don't know about Russia. Did this man have this much on board or was he drunk from the start.
