How To Plot Flight Routes For Trip Around World

Fri Dec 29, 2006 9:29 am

I'm planning a trip around the world and would like to plot my flight routes (only approximately) between cities. It doesn't even have to be the precise routes -- just lines (or splines) connecting the cities.

I've looked all over and have not found anything that does this. The Great Circle Mapper webpage is totally inadequate since it doesn't output in a nice high resolution format, and was probably not really made for this purpose anyway.

Can anyone recommend a site or software that does this well?

Just in passing, I've noticed a few people who've done travel blogs use Google Maps to do this, but haven't really made note of how they did it, or even be able to offer you an example to look at. But if I were to start anywhere, I'd start with Google Maps.

In my previous apartment, I had a large-scale map of the world pinned to the wall with thumbtacks stuck in all the cities I'd flown into (except for Macau -- it's too close to HKG) and then joined the thumbtacks with thread -- That was quite a conversation piece! My only problem was that HKG was being pulled out of the wall by all the thread around the thumbtack!

If you can find the piece a few years ago Mgm had a very tricked out Dc-8 that circled the globe. It had all the cities it stopped in, there may even be a thread on here about that article,,, im guessing maybe 1997....

I'm working on something similar - would something like this work for you?

If so, I will be happy to either share my source code with you, or to just generate a map for you if you supply me with data about where the lines and dots should go. I could also make the lines be in not-so-hideous colors

Or, if you want to go the Google Maps route, here's a good starting point:
