National Championship Charters: CMH/LCK-PHX

Fri Dec 29, 2006 2:15 pm

Well, I finally got the charter schedule for Columbus for the National Championship game between The Ohio State University and the University of Florida in Glendale/Phoenix. Quite frankly, the schedule this year is disappointing. The last time the Buckeyes went to the National Championship in 2003, there were several widebody charters, including several ATA L-1011s, 2 Northwest 742s, and a United 744. This year, there will be only one heavy making the trek between CMH and PHX. Here's the complete schedule to date:

Airline / Aircraft / Dept Time from CMH / Classification

01/06/07 CMH-PHX

Miami Air / 738 / 05:30 / Charter
Southwest / 73G / 06:15 / Extra Section

indeed very dissapointing. Thank you very much for posting. I was really hoping to see some heavies here in PHX again. With all the bowls I thought there would be a lot more, but it has been very dissapointing.

In 2003 when there were some 742 and 744's at CMH for Fiesta Bowl charters, were any of the gates at CMH widebody capable? Or were the aircraft parted at remote stands? Thanks.

I believe that means that you can book a seat on that plane through the airline, with the others being charters for alumni groups and the like.

Correct - you can book these flights direct with Delta or Southwest (the extra sections mentioned).

Likewise disappointed... Probably won't even make the drive to sky harbor if the best that can be done is an Omni DC-10. 737s/757s/MD80s are a dime a dozen these days... I'm relatively young, but I'm sad that they days when NW/TW/DL flew heavies into PHX as a regular part of the schedule are gone...

Thats quite dissapointing. I was hoping at least that someone would charter in a 777, I think UA brought one in a year or 2 ago.

a DC-10 will be interesting to see.

But are any of the gates at CMH able to handle it?

United was not able to release an aircraft this year for the bowl games, especially with one being out of service due to the unfortunate incident at IAD during a water canon salute where foam was released instead of water, severely damaging the engines.

Most gates at CMH are widebody capable, except those that have been reconfigured for RJ use or that have had the safety circle redrawn for just narrowbody use. United's gate B29 was used for both the 744 and 772 when they flew in for bowl charters. Northwest's gates are also capable of handling widebodies.

Using this map for reference, the following gates have the ability to handle widebody jets:

http://www.port-columbus.com/maps/ticketing3.pdf

Gates A2, B21*, B29-B36, C46, C48-C49, C55-C56.

*The jetway at B21 has been removed for Skybus operations.

One of the reasons for the lack of widebodies is the fact that the Buckeyes are flying commercially or driving to AZ individually from their home towns. I would imagine, however, that they will fly home as a team - hopefully as the new national champions.

On the 6th, the 0600 and 0700 Miami Air departures from LCK are the OSU Marching Band's charters, I'm quite sure.

The team charter was not printed in the schedule I received. Though in past years, they have left earlier in the week than most of the public/private charters.

There are published reports that the team is not traveling as a group as many of the players are at home:

"Travel plans:

Ohio State players are leaving on their own to get to Arizona by Saturday. Their air travel is paid for since the Buckeyes won't be traveling as a team.

Players, who were released for the holidays on Dec. 23, have to be at the bowl site by Saturday for an initial team meeting to be followed by a practice. The Buckeyes will practice for three days before their required bowl report date on Jan. 2, which is when Florida's team will gather in the Phoenix area."

There are guys that I went to high school with that are on a team charter of sorts. Its possible that the entire team isn't together, but some of them are.

If we are going to dig from Ohio news sources: "When the Ohio State Buckeyes board their charter flight for Arizona on Saturday, the airplane ought to know where to go on its own."

went down to PHX and saw the arrival of the L1011, and the Omni DC-10. There where many diffenerent charters parked all around the field. 3 Champion 727s, an ATA 757-300 and L1011, Omni DC-10, 757, Pan Am 727, and many others. On a side note an Air Atlanta Icelandic 747-400F landed too. I have no idea what for, maybe the Barret Jackson auctions later on. That was cool to see also.

It sure was cool seeing the Tristar.

I work on the ramp at Terminal 4 on the North side and got to see a couple of these charters land today..I was mad I didn't at least have my digital camera...The DC-10 arrivals were pretty cool, and thought I was seeing a ghost when the Pan Am 727 landed. Also got to see the Air Atlanta 747 land from the bin of a Mesa CR9.
Ok, wait for the RJ to pass, cleared to push tail south Mike, and you're cleared to spin #2 in the push.

Well... there were still 27 chartered planes from Columbus just today. So I'm not sure that constitutes everyone driving (though I've heard the majority do that).
What's different about this and years past is that then there might have been 15-20 flights on the heaviest day of travel, but the were more DC-10/L1011/747/777.

Here's some posts in the past with some of the flight lists:

I'm assuming everyone's widebodies were tied up - AA must be really short - one of their GNV-PHX flights was an MD-80 - had to make a tech stop at DFW.

There were certainly some unexpected surprises today. The PanAm 727-200 was definitely a blast from the past; I didn't expect to see that here. The ATA L-1011 and Omni DC-10s were on the ground at the same time here in Columbus, which was nice to see. In addition, Delta actually flew 3 extra sections to PHX on 757s, two of which were in Song colors. Even though the line-up this year wasn't quite as spectacular as the 02-03 National Championship, it was still nice to see the increased activity and the rare appearances.

Actually, the first 757 in Song colors to leave was a flight to ATL, equipment swap to accomodate passengers from a delayed flight due to mtc.

...can't imagine people wanting to fly in the day of game, but there were a handful more charters:

3 morning flights from Airtran (Orlando)

And of course, everyone and there brother is repositioning equipment for flights back tonight and tomorrow... Including a Miami Air 738 that's flying empty direct from HIK.

As an aside, it sounds like American has been bringing in 767-300s once/twice a day for the past week or two - there was one as a scheduled flight from ORD, then there was an extra section in flight from MIA.

A lot of the players prefer to drive so they can get reimbursed for the mileage. That being said, I am surprised Coach Tressel did not ask everyone to get back to Columbus after the holiday and fly together on a team charter.

Given what appear to be relatively-light military schedules these days, I am surprised not to see any WOA MD11s or NAA 763s on your list. It's as if both those airlines were shut out by whomever was organizing the Ohio charters. Surprising, at it would seem to be much more efficient to charter one larger aircraft than a bunch of little aircraft from Sun Country, Airtran, Miami Air and the like.
