Western Airlines Starts Ops Jan 18th

Sat Dec 30, 2006 4:07 pm

Western Airlines will commence operations from Bellingham, WA to Ontario, San Diego, and Phoenix/Mesa (Williams Gateway) on January 18th. Flights will be operated by two Xtra Airways B.737-400's. Anyone know if they'll be painted in Western's scheme? Flights have apparently been selling well at iflywestern.com

Western isn't trademarkable because it is a common word, right? Since nobody else flies with the name at this point, Delta can't claim they are trying to benefit by piggybacking on an existing product.

Now if only they take some 727s and DC-10s from Marana and put 'em back in service, it will just be like the glory days!  biggrin
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

What the hell? Seriously? An airline based out of Bellingham?

This should be interesting.

BLI does make sense as it offers a cheaper alternative to SEA. Good luck and hope they make it this time without being bought by a major US carrier.

There are still seats available on the inaugural BLI-ONT flight...if I wasn't in class that day, I'd probably get myself a ticket.

Gotta say that was my first reaction when I read this. Didn't really think the BLI terminal was big enough for an airline to base their entire operations there, but I hope they make it. It'd be great for the city!

I think their intent, however is to be the cheaper alternative to YVR.

Well congrats to William's Gateway, this will be their second scheduled airline. Some day, PHX will need a reliever, and believe it or not (I never expected to see it so soon), they are well on their way! Let's see some major air service enter the market!

Who are the people involved with this operation and their backgrounds? The website has nothing other than a couple names in a press release. I am very skeptical.

Williams-Gateway still has a long ways to go, and major infusion of cash will be needed to promote and support service. Vision is down to 2 flights at week to North Las Vegas, Skytours or whatever the name is, will be only seasonal, then again as in the old Clint Eastwood movie,,Who goes to Arizona in the Summer Time (please note that I sub Arizona for Tucson) and Western well we'll see. WGA needs to subsidize an regional airline to LAX and maybe DFW or DEN.

They have futuristic plans. According to their website they are showing the current station manager vacancies

Station Manager - Denver, CO
Station Manager - Palm Springs, CA
Station Manager - Oakland, CA
Station Manager - Las Vegas, NV
Station Manager - Salt Lake City, UT
Station Manager - Dallas, TX

Funny, I didn't see an ad for a manager at Olympus Mons or anything like that. All those airports exist today!

I see Western have dropped Reno from their plans. They announced flights from Reno to SAN and BLI on the same day as Southwest announced SAN-Reno. No surprise SNA-RNO hasn't started but I guess BLI-RNO wasn't doing too well so it got axed as well

I did a little looking about the airline, and found a few articles that were interesting about the co-founders. Just scroll through and look for the articles relating to Western Airlines. I found somewhere that they wanted to operate MD-80's, but it looks like they decided to contract with XTRA. Interesting that the co-founder owns Commercial Aircraft Interiors.

Thank you very much for the links!

I think the name "Western US Airlines" would make them get rid of any obstacle, besides being a more appropriate name.
I think there is some temerity or arrogance on an airline that uses a very extensive name... "Western Airlines" is not the only carrier from the whole West.
Hence, they should try to be so modest as their services.

No, but there are two ways of looking at a brand name. One is that the name is trying convey the "only or best" option in the market. But the other is just that the brand name is just descriptive of their product.

Here, Western indicates they operate in the West. As a North American carrier, we on this continent assume they mean Western USA/Canada/Mexico. While in South America, you might ask: "western what?" that isn't relevant, because the airline isn't marketed to you.

You know Reno is going to be a tougher and tougher sell as time goes by.
No one has been affected more by the growth in Indian Gaming more than Reno. When the writing was on the wall, LAS and RNO chose 2 different paths.

Vegas got bigger, noisier, flashier, and brighter.

Reno focused on the non-gaming economy.
They are doing a good job...but, that means air-service levels more consistent to a city its size.
Because of gaming, Reno will always have a rainy-day cache of passengers, but it will never be like it was 20 years ago, when it was One of only 3 places like it in the U.S..

Take into consideration a few cities within the region that are as big, or bigger than Reno, but with much less airline activity:
Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Stockton, Modesto, Bakersfield, Salinas, Eugene, Spokane, Boise, Provo, Salem, are some that come to mind, in that population group.
Some of these places don't even have airline service...
But.
What I would love to see some kind of empirical data, comparing passengers to population....and the ratio. (And not the anecdotal evidence I purport!)

I think DL allowed the Western trademarks to expire so this company was able to reregister them.

BLI has turned into one of Allegiant's business stations.

There are a several old threads from November with more info about Western and links to various articles.

The flight was originally a loop BLI-SAN-RNO-BLI. They could not make the numbers work for BLI-RNO without San Diego so both got dropped.
