Plane Down On Approach At SXM

Sun Dec 31, 2006 5:41 am

Just heard that a plane went down in Maho Bay (the ocean) on approach to Juliana at SXM. No specifics yet. I'll give an update when I know more.

Hope everyone aboard is OK.

Well I believe no big airliners at night?

So a small plane?

Single engine plane with 7 pax coming from SBH. It went down on aproach approx. 5 miles from the field. No report on casualties yet. Rescue teams report it sank. My best guess it is the Cessna Caravan 208 commuter that runs SXM-SBH. It is the only single engine I know that takes 7 pax.

Is it a plane operated by St Barth Commuter that crashed ? (It has 7 pax, one beside the pilot and 6 very tight places).

Thanks for the information - I never know what are the planes between SXM and SBH, only the carrier names !

The plane that crashed was therefore private, I suppose...

I was just thinking of the number of spotters at SXM, if there was ever a plane crash:

"Well, we have photographic evidence of the crash from 11 different angles, and two complete videos of the accident."

When I read the title I was also imagining something like an American 757 or AF A340 in the water in flaming pieces.

Good to know nothing too catastrophic,

as for the "11 different angles of photographic evidence" bit, my guess is that if any aircraft of size went down too close to the field on approach, more than a couple of those photographers might be going with it.

Wow, glad I'm not the only one who has experienced this. In the early 90's I had about 3 seperate dreams about an airliner crashing near my house and on Feb 15, 1992 a BAX DC8 crashed in a field across from our house about a 1/2 mile down.

crazy coincidence -- so did i. the dream was a mesh of my memories of spotting down there with the crazy landing at SBH. we landed in the water and swam to safety.

So any confirmation as to who the operator was? My best guess would be Air Caraibes, based on the aircraft and the route. But I'm just speculating.

Really. What I'm afraid of is if a plane crashes on Maho, what will happen to the openness of the beach?  Sad

Glad to hear all alright. Planes can be replaced.

Truth be told, that is exactly what would happen. I can't think of a time when there isn't some form of camera equipment there.

Well, the rescue is a nice way to start the new year.

Is there any new data on what may have caused the plane to go down?

I actually was right there and saw the plane comming down as I was seated at the bar. Just got back, so i'm a little tired, but I do have some pics of the plane as it crashed, and sank in about 20-30 seconds. That was really really strange, cause we heard the guy make his mayday call at 300 feet. He wasn't specific, just said engine stoped, and then, we saw it crashed. Will have to post the pics at some point, too tired now, need a nap!

Freaky?

You want freaky? Remember the movie Twister? We used to have a drive-in theater here in town and it was showing Twister. A freak Pacific storm drove on in and produced lightning and thunder. Just shortly after the scene in the movie where everyone is at the drive in, a bolt of lightning struck the movie screen and started it on fire. Power then went out to half the city. Needless to say, it made front page news here (then again anything can.. it's a small town) and 4 local news stations (out of Portland). After the owner of the drive in fixed the "screen", attendance fell and he pulled the plug on it. There's a Home Depot there now.

It was a Piper Cherokee 6, going to SXM on a supply run. He departed 16:00 hours - 12 minutes into the flight the engine overrevved to 3750 rpms - possible prop governor failure. At 700 meters off the end of the runway the pilot decided to make a water landing rather than attempt to make Juliana possibly endangering a large number of boats and tourists on the beach at the end of the runway. He ditched the plane near a cruise ship and was promtly rescued by the cruise ship. The plane sank in 4 minutes. The pilot is OK.
