Question About FedEx Mainline Fleet

Sun Dec 31, 2006 12:43 pm

I've been looking at the FedEx Express mainline fleet and I have a few questions about the equipment types currently in service with that company. Based on the pics here at A.net I've come to the conclusion that FedEx flies 5 different types with a total of 12 different variations of those five types. They are as follows:

1. Airbus A300
-A300B4-600
-A300B4-600R
-A300F4-600R
2. Airbus A310
-A310-200F
-A310-300F
3. Boeing 727
-727-200F Advanced
4. McDonnell Douglas DC-10/Boeing MD-10
-DC-10-10F
-DC-10-30CF
-DC-10-30F
-MD-10-10F
-MD-10-30F
5. McDonnell Douglas MD-11
-MD-11F

Is this accurate? My two primary points of interest are the A300s and the DC-10s/MD-10s. Does FedEx really fly both -600 and 600R variations of the A300? And does the company continue to use DC-10s or have they all been converted to MD-10s? Also, are there any other planes in service with FedEx mainline that I have failed to list here?

Thanks

All the dc-10s should be converted to md-10,s now i cant answer for some that are in the fleet like ones still in ua livery, i dont know what their staus is
some of the ua, had been converted why these were not painted i dont dont know. I heard there were a lot of mx on that plane and was a goat.

The 300,s i do not know, i think they came in painted from somewhere, and i cant visually tell them apart,,

A few 727-100s are still hanging around, loaded on last week!

I haven't seen those A/C in some time:
It was my understanding that those two A/C, N321FE and N323FE, if I remember correctly, were leased for a short term, and then returned, hence the reason why they were never painted up in FedEx livery. Once again, this is my understanding, and I could be way off.

I think FedEx sends us a 727-100 to us here @ BNA from time to time. I usually see either a -200 or a -100 parked down there next to the A300. Man I love seeing those oldies here though.

You can also add the Cessna 208 Caravan and the ATR-42s and -72s. Both of these types are owned by FX and operated by feeders, IIRC.

Ah yes the famous caravan perfect casino landing. Shortly after take off they developed some kind of problem over the Mississppi Delta. Well there is not much out there but a bunch of casinos. They managed to land safely and got out to put the a/c off the highway and got so far and an 18 wheeler hit I think the wing or some part of it.. I would hate to have been that truck driver calling into his office that he had just ran into a plane....lol

In despite of the A380F cancellation, this still makes FedEx the largest Airbus widebody operator in the world...  Smile

[A nice note: I was once admitted to the cockpit, and photographed at the captain's seat, of N217FE, the last B722 ever built, delivered brand new to FX.]

Where will FX get all the 757´s from?

It still a very popular civil a/c model and FX ordered 50-60 of them to phase out the 727F...

Don't forget they also have A310-200, A310-300, A300, and MD-11 each with both GE and PW power, and 727-200 both with original series engines and with the Valsan conversion (both outside engines replaced by JT8D-200 series, and is it also a 2-person glass flight deck?).

My understanding on the feeders is the aircraft are leased out to the operators for some trivial amount and are indeed owned (but not operated) by FedEx. If you do an FAA registry search, for example, on N707FX (a C208) it shows the owner as Federal Express Corporation, same for N727FX.

I loaded that very airplane just Friday morning! I asked the FE if he knew the significance of the aircraft. Very cool to be around that A/C.

The Valsan 727's have the standard 3 person cockpit.

I thought I read these will be from "all over" as the majors start retiring dozens them from there fleets. UA, A^A, CO, NW, etc.
Ding! You are now free to keep supporting Frontier.

Correct, we own them, Barron Aviation flies them.

There are about 40+/- frames that could be purchased outright now, we can get a few more from domestic carriers as they replace their fleet types.

continue to use DC-10s

Yes sir, we still fly DC10 in addition to MD10.  airplane
