NWA 9980 MCO-DTW 744 Today!

Tue Jan 02, 2007 5:09 am

Anybody out there know why this is being operated with a 744 today??? Its on FlightAware. My guess is its extra capacity for Christmas holiday rush...Great opportunity to catch a domestic short ride on a 747 no less!

It's not a scheduled passenger flight, but a charter. The only people allowed on-board will be the crew.....and the charter.

Saw it land from the US terminal at MCO earlier today. Wondered what in the world it was doing in MCO until I remembered about the Capital One Bowl. It was pretty cool to see an NW 747 at MCO in any case.

A lot more extra people for bowl games. Not only do you have the team and coaches, but the coaches' families, plus a lot more university adminstration and their families (pretty much every university VP goes down for a bowl game). This compares to the regular season, where it's the team, the coaches (no families, since they leave Friday and back Saturday night) and a few administrators (again, no families).

Well, theres all of the equipment, band, team, coaches, special passengers, etc. I don't believe there will be fans on this a/c, I know that WN did some Wisconsin charters on Friday for fans.

I heard NW only has 2 DC-10s left, and they're both operating MSP-HNL
is that true?

I'm hearing there's only two *active* DC-10s (1234 being one of them), but there's others that are still functioning (charters, backups, etc). Supposedly, the DC-10s are still available for charter, after the 1/7/7 HNL retirement.

It was for the badger band. The 747 was for the upper class-men in the band and the cheerleaders. There was also a RD 737 for the freshmen band members. I know this because my brother is in the band and I went to the airport to see them land. I took a few pics of the 747 as it is not often that we get them here in MSN.

The whole band got on busses and took forever getting to the McClain center to get their luggage, so I drove around downtown and took some pics of the capitol building and also of the world famous state street.

I also noted on FlightAware that NW operated 9980 BOI-MIA on the 27th with an A330-300. What was that all about?

Interesting that they needed another 737 for the freshman band members. Must have been more than Band, Band Staff, and Cheerleaders on that plane. I would find it hard to imagine the band used all 408 seats.(I'm not doubting you since you had a family member on board, but just seems weird) I was a part of a BigTen band and we all always traveled together and never split up flights.

In past years, the band was a lot smaller. This year was the first year that they did not cut anyone, therefore making the band much bigger than an average band. But you are correct that there were band more than band associated people on the plane. As my brother put it, "A bunch of rich old guys who give alot of money to the UW got to sit in first class." I had asked him if he got to sit in first class, since it was international business, and that was his response. So I guess along with the band were a bunch of university donors.

That was taking the University of Miami team back to Miami from the bowl game in Boise.

Did the 4 flights race home? I'm sure the 737 lost, but do they let the 747 fly full speed domestic USA?

Are any of the following NW DC10s still in the fleet?

N221NW
N224NW
N225NW

These are the only DC10s I've flown on. I've seen them many times besides at SEA and MSP, and I love them!

No clue about how much it costs, but a university gets 4.5 million for making it to a bowl like the capital one. Michigan and USC got 17 million each for making it to the rose bowl.

Off topic..but, after some travel expenses, the money is divided evenly with all the schools in the team's respective conferences.

No. As far as I have seen at MSP lately, N234NW is the only one operated scheduled, and N237NW is spare. Unless there are some others hiding around the system.
