Not officially I suppose.

US 751 BRU PHL 12:40 PM 3:25 PM

PHL.
Thats an odd timeframe for a transatlantic. I think you got the flight in the wrong order as a flight leaving PHL at 11:25 would get in well past 15:35 so i think the first one is PHL-ATH and the second one is ATH-PHL. I honestly say they should pull the A333 off from MAd in the summer of 08 and send it to ATH if the route goes well during 07.

Any aircraft operating this route for US Airways is going to be VERY weight restricted, correct?

People always say that but I've never had a problem. Then again, I also leave plenty of time to actually do what I need to do there. People get so pissed off at massive airports and cry foul, yet only leave them selfs 45 minutes for a transfer. Get there a few hours early. Take some time, go spot. You'll be a lot less stressed.

What in the world are you talking about? I don't set up the connection time.. US Airways does. I just take what they offer. And who wants to be in PHL for hours? It just means that you gonna be sitting for hours, just for your flight to be delayed or cancelled. That's not a good thing. I have flown through PHL several, several, SEVERAL times.. and I would average delayed flights about 60% of the time.. cancelled flights about 40%.. but is that any kind of record an airline or an airport would want? Mostly, it's weather problems.. but a problem is a problem.. there isn't much to be done about weather, but overall.. PHL just gets thumbs down for me..

I don't care where I am at for hours as long as I have my camera, to answer that question. Be it PHL or be it in the middle of a swamp.

Every problem I've come across in PHL has been weather related, yet some how US Airways is to blame for above average poor weather in the PHL area? Sure they do have a fairly set up there, but lets be honest, the problem is overblown.

Although I did go through there once and the building had no air conditioning. I regretted not going to CLT that day.

I am not quite sure if ZRH needs extra transatlantic flights. Is their (US Airways) connectivity out of PHL much better, then lets say UA via IAD, or AA, DL, CO via their respective hubs?

I'd say its better than United at Dulles - comparable to CO in EWR, but not as great as DL in ATL or American in Chicago (different set of markets for connections, really).

You sir, have very bad timing. Please let me know the next time you're headed through there, I'm taking that day off. PHL does not have problems like that on a daily basis.

PHL doesn't have slight weather problems. When there is a problem, it usually turns into a nightmare.

Well, keep in mind this is an airplane enthusiast web site. For most people (including, I'm sure, several of the road warriors on this site - myself included I know) don't relish the thought to sit and spot in an airport for hours when we could be on our way to our destination - we spend enough time at airports - I myself like to get to the airport 45 minutes before check-in; have a layover under an hour, and be in a car/bus/train within 15 minutes after landing. If I have a long layover, I go to a restaurant or club and relax there instead of spotting. Time is something I don't have a whole lot of - instead of spending extra time waiting in an airport, I'll spend that time with friends and family instead.

Here is the latest government data on EWR (CO) and PHL (US):

October 2006 (Last Available Report)
CO - EWR % On Time Arrivals = 66.2%
US - PHL % On Time Arrivals = 71.6%

July 2006
CO - EWR % On Time Arrivals = 61.7%
US - PHL % On Time Arrivals = 65.3%
Obviously neither of these are really acceptable, but EWR suffers from not only the NE Corridor FAA dilemma, but it's very close proximity to JFK and EWR.

Passengers Denied Boarding - All Airports (Involuntary) Jan-Sep 2006 - CO = 1.85% US = 1.11%

Consumer Complaints (Formal) - All Categories - All Airports - October 2006 - CO = 1.16/100K US = 1.06/100K

On another note: I'm surprised they did not use the 333 on the ATH route as originally planned and if you'll note, all 3 flights are departing AND arriving PHL from Terminal "B" - a Domestic Terminal. I find the arrival difficult to comprehend, unless they plan to use the airport (ala IAD) people movers to get passengers to A Immigration/Customs from an interim parking area.
If indeed they are using "B" for ATH, that's possibly why they switched to a 767.
Guess Parker didn't get his gates (yet).

I think he meant CO's EWR offers more connections, when thing go correctly. Which was supported by the last data I saw. However US's PHL is the seconds best hub in NE. (vs DL&AA@JFK and UA@IAD)

How many international range airplanes does USAir have ? They only have 8 A333 plus 767's and a handful of Atlantic capable 757's.

I would think the ZRH flt would at least be able to arrive at A and then taxi over to B to depart. It does arrive earlier in the afternoon before the BA/AF/LH flts.

However the BRU and ATH flts should be interesting. They obviously can't arrive at B and A east/west becomes pretty crowded around that time. It doesn't make sense that B would be listed as the arriving terminal. Makes more sense to remote park somewhere and then bus the paxs. They can depart from B, but that will create an interesting situation as US international flts will depart from 3 terminals now...A west, A east, and B

I plugged the times into swiss.com and only got a connection on UA from BOS.

I will tell you this. When I went to GLA from PHL. I had 1 1/2 connection time. We got in from DTW on time, but when we got to the gate they had started to board the aircraft and we where the last group of people to get on. Why are they boarding this flight so far out from departure time?

I can handle connections in ATL, ORD and even in IAH. But, PHL needs to do some big time remodeling. That airport is the arm pit of the USA.

Very Happy to Hear to see US adding additional Transatlantic routes.

Athens, Brussels and Zurich are all airports that aren't served as well from the US and therefore i feel these are great addition to the US network and Star Alliance's presence in the USA.

I gotta say, I fly US a lot, and i've probably never had a good experience at PHL, Especially when connecting to and from International flights, and regionals.

PHL doesn't have room to expand and so they try and make due with what they have. Unfortunately what they have isn't enough to handle all these flights. It gets the worse in the evenings, during Transatlantic Departures. This is because All the inbound International flights come in the afternoon, then because of customs, and the long walks, domestic flights are delayed (slightly) for international connecting passengers. And then then all these domestic departures get delayed and mixed with the first batch of Transatlantic Departures. Because there is pretty much only 1 real departure runway (9R/27L) and 1 main arrival runway(9L/27R) along with a crossing runway (17/35) which is mostly used for commuting traffic, All aircraft have to depart using only 1 ruway, leading to long ground delays.

They really can't get their hands on any more widebodies until the A350/787 decision is made. Of course, if the merger with DL goes through, that problem will be solved.

AA operates their ZRH flights to/from both JFK and DFW. While UA does not have as many connecting possibilities at IAD than say DL in ATL or US in PHL or CO in EWR, they do have the advantage of having the LX codeshares (which are what really helped sustain AA's ZRH services previously), both on the IAD-ZRH run, as well as on the ex-ZRH end. US will presumably also benefit from establishing ZRH codeshares with LX.

Quoting AirMale (Reply 11):
I am not quite sure if ZRH needs extra transatlantic flights.

Agreed as traffic is really quite thin during non-peak times of the year; however US is trying to take advantage of its *A connections with LX - it will presumably have feeds on both ends, which is better than CO, DL, and AA - all of which will only have feed on one end. AA may eventually have to drop one of their two daily flights by next winter though....

This is a valid question. Zurich has many US flights for the size of the airport:
LX to JFK (twice a day), BOS, MIA, ORD, LAX and EWR (BBJ PrivatAir); UA to IAD; AA to JFK, DFW; CO to EWR; DL to ATL. But as Zurich is a big Star hub it is probably worth for USAirways. They for sure will code-share with LX.

On another note: I'm surprised they did not use the 333 on the AND CURRENT: Athens - Eleftherios Venizelos (Spata) (ATH / LGAV), Greece">ATH route as originally planned and if you'll note, all 3 flights are departing AND arriving PHL from Terminal "B" - a Domestic Terminal. I find the arrival difficult to comprehend, unless they plan to use the airport (ala IAD) people movers to get passengers to A Immigration/Customs from an interim parking area.
If indeed they are using "B" for AND CURRENT: Athens - Eleftherios Venizelos (Spata) (ATH / LGAV), Greece">ATH, that's possibly why they switched to a 767.
Guess Parker didn't get his gates (yet).

Well US got their gates in A-East today. DL will not be moving until at least the Fall and these 3 new flights will be using A-East.
We are but a moment in this vast Universe and when gone we will never have existed.
