AirAsia To Double Airbus A320 Order

Wed Jan 03, 2007 9:53 pm

This just hit the wires:

AirAsia to Double Airbus A320 Order
By Bruce Stanley
HONG KONG -- AirAsia Bhd. has agreed to buy an additional 100 Airbus jetliners, doubling its existing order for single-aisle A320s to fulfill its ambitious plans for growth in Southeast Asia, a person with knowledge of the decision said.

The order is valued at $6.7 billion based on list prices.

The rest is subscriber content only.
Anybody got more details?

Sounds like more rapid expansion for them to stay ahead of the debt curve!

Will be curious to know if this order will appear in Airbus total's for 2006 or 2007. With that being said congratulations to the A32X family.

You kidding right? I guess here is one of the orders of 100 aircraft that Airbus is known to have around these dates..... the question is, will this be part of their 2006 orders or will this be a new 2007 order? I personally think it will be announced as a 2006 order, just like the 10 787s that Boeing got 2 days ago...
Anyways, congrats to Airbus and their best-selling A320..

There was something on CNN yesterday about Air Asia making a major announcement on Thursday with some kind of international agreement with Easyjet and Virgin, but this has been denied by both parties. If not this, then why so many new aircraft!!!!!!!!

Flipping heck that's a monster order, I was wondering if the talk of an Air Asia, Virgin tie up would involve the sale of some of Virgin America's orders for the A320 now that they haven't got a license - I guess that this scotches that!

Would be a nice start for 2007, if this order comes true and was not already placed in 2006. A significant order to close 2006 if it is indeed already ordered. Airbus would touch 800 orders with this order, if it stops with this one , that is.

Mr. T. Fernandes has predicted, when the first A320 was delivered to Air Asia, that they might require upto 400 of these aircraft in the future. This order puts him halfway...

There was 'talk' that Air Asia might start longhaul routes to Manchester in the future with fares as low as MYR 300 one way. That's about US$85 oneway. I read it on line yesterday but can't seem to find this particular article now...

But here's something similar..

Plenty of discussion already regarding their dramatic proposal. A public conference will be held this Friday.

One latest development on Newsasia is that they said a spokesperson said that it'd be operated by FAX, i.e. Fly Asian Express, which presently operates in Borneo using F50s. Hmm.

http://www.flyasianxpress.com/site/en/fax/home.jsp

I flew AK KUL-PNH on 9M-AFC, the Manchester United-coloured A320, on the 1st Jan. Its interior was OK - basic gray - and the seats and legroom fine. Its in-flight refreshments were surprisingly and pleasingly inexpensive for such an environment. And not bad either.

Am flying REP-KUL will AK on the 9th Feb.

---

There is considerable potential for AK in S. E. Asia, subject, of course, to permission. Then what about the rest of Asia? Don't forget AirAsia Lanka and Bangladesh AirAsia are already being planned.

Personally, I can't wait for BKK-VTE-BKK and KUL-SIN-KUL, although the latter might be some way off.

Per my understanding FAX is supposed to be the basis for the planned long-haul venture, but not this additional A320 order.

The previous order was for 100 Firm + 30 Options on the A320,

the new number being bandied around (To be confirmed) is 150 Firm + 50 Options, and 20 A330 + 10 Options

while i believe the A320 order as Tony Fernandes has repeatedly said that they new more aircraft now, im abit skeptical over the A330, if they do plan on flying UK-Malaysia route, can a fully laden A330-200 handle that? probably not, and im sure there will be a stop over in the middle east somewhere...

well, enough for crystal ball gazing, wait till this fridays supposedly big news announcment and we'll see whats actually happening

Wouldn't the second part of that follow up order be even more interesting than the first?

Guess Air Asia is the company John Leahy was talking about as being the first low cost to buy the A330...

Knowing Air Asia and their aggressive business plan, I'd dare to say this A330 order is just a stepping stone for them and if their low cost long haul flights prove to be successful, I see them ordering a considerable number of A380s in a high density configuration early next decade....

I highly doubt they would make such dramatic increase in capacity. I think A330s would serve the high-density Asian routes and for the European ones Air Asia would probably order A350-900s or -1000s. If the rumoured Virgin Atlantic and easyJet alliance goes ahead, I'd expect Virgin to do some initial longhaul flying between Asia and Europe, while its partners would take care of the regional feeder flights.

Fly Asian Express, or FAX, would serve these routes in cooperation with British budget carrier easyjet and Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic, the executive said, adding a caveat that talks between FAX and Virgin Atlantic were at a preliminary stage.

Another person familiar with FAX's plans for long-haul flights said that FAX has agreed to "tie up" with easyjet and Virgin but declined to provide details before an official announcement planned for Friday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A Virgin Atlantic spokeswoman declined to say if her company has held talks with FAX. Officials at easyjet couldn't be reached for immediate comment.

They actually currently have 50 Aircraft (malaysian Air Asia only i think), 35 733 and 15 A320 (AFA-AFO)

So currently there are still 85 A320 outstanding, that are yet to be delivered

Concerning the A330, i would like to know whether the LCCT at KUL can handle the Pax loads of a fully laden A330.. congestion perhaps? as if the LCCT needed more people in it...

I flew KUL-PNH on 1st Jan with AK. It was the first time I had been to KUL's LCCT. It was amazingly crowded, not only with people but also boxes and suitcases, yet oddly the international security checkpoint was almost completely empty, which enabled a very quick transition from landside to airside. It'd be interesting to see people waiting for AK's widebody flights while fighting for terminal space with people on AK's intra-Asia flights.  Silly In comparison, KUL's main terminal was eerily quiet.

By the end of january. I guess we can exclude this order as a possible candidate of monday's major order.

Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- AirAsia Bhd., Southeast Asia's largest budget airline, may agree next week to buy 100 Airbus SAS A320 planes, valued at an estimated $6.7 billion, as the carrier expands to meet demand for low-cost travel.

''In the next week we will make an announcement either way,'' AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes said in an interview today. ''Business is booming and we do need more planes.'' Fernandes said he's traveling to London next week to meet executives from Toulouse, France-based Airbus.

Well from the article that PanAm_DC10 provided we get a clear understanding as to who will be placing the major order on monday.

The only doubt that still remains is the number of planes being ordered, the options and if a wide body (A333) order is also to be announced.

Reading from various media reports it seems that AirAsia is willing to order 20 x A333 + 10 options. If this is in fact correct it will make 2006 the best year in terms of sales for the A330 family.

Probably also the reason why the order was for 'just' 50 + 50 iso the full 100 as was thought.

The first 50 which will all be delivered over the next 5 to 6 years will have to have the current engines anyhow, whereas the second batch of 50 (which will be delivered after 2012) will likely have the new GTF, yet since that isn't officially launched yet by Airbus, the order can't be signed for the moment...

The fact however Mr Fernandes is speaking of the 'very near future' when asked when he will convert the options suggests an announcement from Airbus might be imminent...
