SQ will make a lot more money sending the A340-500 to Jakarta and back than towing it to a remote stand at Changi for four hours.

You sound pissed off about it, you should rejoice, the SQ A340-500 is a gorgeous bird, and those Exec Economy seats (2-3-2 on an Airbus) are very comfy. Book yourself on one and feel the quality!

They must really fizz off the blocks when fueled for a 500nm flight.

I've heard that it's also to help keep the captains and first officers current on the fleet. They don't get too many opportunities to take off and land this bird.

This is also true - with 15 hour sectors on the NY and LA flights, you can do a whole month's flying in two return trips. With a heavy crew (4 pilots I think), you might, if not for the SIN-CGK-SIN legs, go for a couple of months without doing a takeoff or landing. Which was the problem with that UAL 747 that nearly crashed after takeoff at SFO, first officer hadn't done a takeoff for a couple of months, they lost an engine which he countered with aileron instead of rudder, speed and heading went awry, and they found themselves heading for a hill covered in apartment buildings close to stall speed. If there's any two cockpit alarms you don't want to hear at the same time, it's STALL and PULL UP TERRAIN. I don't recall how close they came to disaster but ATC lost radar contact and they broke windows and set off every car alarm in the neighbourhood. Since then, UAL have put in place better crew scheduling to ensure everyone gets to have a go on the controls from time to time.

And your source for this is???

Of course there's training, it goes on all the time. The segment you're talking about is great for line checks or for training. It's great for FO training and making sure the FO stays current rather than going to the sim...

Good plan.

Another thing is that it keeps a plane close by in case it is needed for the LAX or EWR runs. Delta did this for quite some time with the 777 between ATL and MCO a couple of times a day. They used the capacity for all the folks going to the Mouse House but also gave them a spare plane in case one of the ones going overseas went tech for some reason.

IIRC SQ has 5 of the A345s. Two of them required for the run to LAX and two required for EWR. That leaves the 5th one to make the run back and forth to Jakarta for capacity, training, and having that one close by in case of problems with any of the others. You can easily re-accomodate folks on a shorter run like that than the once daily to EWR.

SQ also need the 5th A340-500 so that four can fly while one is in MX. They had a problem about a year ago when two were in MX and they had to substitute a 777-200ER to LAX. It flew SIN-LAX nonstop fine, but had to stop at TPE on the return for fuel. I forget how many of those runs they did.

I can't find SQ's A345 on SIN-CGK anymore... Will the A345 fly on another regional route then? Or only on SIN-EWR and SIN-LAX??

That probably means one of them is in MX for a while.
