Hawaiian Temporarily Suspends San Diego-Maui

Thu Jan 04, 2007 5:46 am

Hawaiian is temporarily suspending nonstop daily flights between San Diego and Maui from January 9, 2007 through March 15, 2007, due to a delay in the availability of additional aircraft to its fleet.

In May 2006, Hawaiian announced that service on several routes between the West Coast and Hawaii would be expanded during the fourth quarter in conjunction with the adding of four Boeing 767 jets to its fleet. The suspension of the San Diego-Maui service became necessary as Hawaiian has encountered an unexpected delay in getting interior modifications completed and certified. As a result, Hawaiian has had to reschedule some of its transpacific flights over the past several weeks.

Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian's president and CEO, said, "We realize these changes are causing inconvenience for some of our customers, which goes against everything we work for at Hawaiian, and to them we offer our heartfelt apology. We are working as quickly as possible to complete the interior modifications and have our full complement of aircraft in service."

Hawaiian is accommodating San Diego-Maui travelers affected by the suspension of service by rebooking them on its San-Diego-Honolulu service with an interisland flight to Maui, or making other travel accommodations.

Hawaiian plans to resume its San Diego-Maui nonstop daily service on March 16, 2007.

A/C 596 starts flying tomorrow I believe. 597 and 598 were delayed by the extra work on 596. All 3 should be flying by March....when OGG-SAN starts up again.

Does anyone have any idea as to what the new routes will be?

My wife and I flew PHX-HNL twice this past year in their first, and it was terrific service. They got our loyalty on trips to there.

The plan as I recall was to increase service to existing destinations, such as adding Maui service. I don't remember the specifics. The new aircraft as non-ER models don't have as much range, but using them for existing west coast service does free up the ERs to add new destinations further from HNL at some point in the future.

I would love to see them go to Japan. I would actually enjoy an overnight to break the trip somewhat.

The new planes have already been committed to exisitng routes:

1. OGG-PDX goes daily; OGG-SEA goes daily

2. OGG-SAN goes year-round

3. HNL-SEA goes to 10x weekly; HNL-SMF goes to 11x weekly

4. And one aircraft will be kept as a spare in HNL just in case something goes wrong.
