BOS International Service In The 1980's

Once upon a time, BOS was the second largest transatlantic US gateway. Deregulation did away with this.

The 1980's still saw a variety of international service. I'm trying to remember all the flights/ routes that existed then but not now:

Sometime between TWA's Summer 1979 and Fall 1980 schedules, they dropped TW910, the puddle-jumper from Boston to Athens, stopping first in the Azores.

It flew on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the Tuesday flight stopping in Terceira, and the Thursday flight stopping in Santa Maria. It then flew on to Lisbon, Madrid, Rome and Athens, same plane 707 service the entire way.

By the fall of 1980, they had added TW47, a daily L-1011 to JFK timed to meet up with the nightly bank of flights to Europe.

In October 1980, TWA's direct flights to Europe from BOS were:

TW754 BOS-LHR (with a change of gauge for the continuation to FRA)
TW810 BOS-CDG
TW846 BOS-FCO (with a change of gauge for the continuation to ATH)

TW754 was probably a 747 for some time, and 810 and 846 were most likely L-1011s. I recall flying 754 SFO-BOS-LHR in March 1982, and it was an L-1011 SFO-BOS with a change of gauge to a 747 BOS-LHR.

I'd say technology did away with it not deregulation. I believe we have more transatlantic service today than we had in the 80's. However, back then BOS was pretty much as far as one could fly non-stop from Europe which is why so many carriers stopped here.

I was always amazed at the types of aircraft Delta used to/from Montreal. Amazing. Does anyone know how full (generally speaking) those flights were?

Deregulation had a lot to do with it. If you look at where the bulk of the gateways for transatlantic flights are now in the U.S., it's from the major hubs created as a result of deregulation.

Atlanta, Newark, Detroit, Washington-Dulles, Dallas, Houston, etc. were never major gateways for European traffic. They are now because that's where the respective carriers choose to collect their passengers to funnel them onwards. In the days prior to deregulation, a domestic airline would simply interline a passenger to Pan Am, TWA, or a foreign carrier.

Very true, and much (but not all) of that growth has come from service out of the domestic hubs overflying the traditional gateways on the east coast.

Not true at all - in the '70s even, there were plenty of West Coast-to-Europe flights which were quite easily handled by 747s and DC-10s.

In November 1980, 754 was flown with an L-1011, and when I flew it two years later in December 1982 it was with a 747. I believe these two aircraft flip-flopped on this route for several years...
