Iberia To Start Flying To Algiers!

Thu Jan 04, 2007 8:59 pm

Iberia will start flying to Algiers as of January 7th from MAD. The flight will be operated by an A319 on a two flight per week basis. This is IB's response to the increased demand between the two countries for connections. Spanair will also start flights from MAD and from BCN.This will increase IB's offer to Africa where they already serve Casablanca, Tánger & Marrakech in Morocco, Cairo , Malabo , Dakar , Johannesburg & Lagos
The following article is in spanish only but i have traslated the important parts on this thread.

Is this the first time IB operates to Algeria or was it already operating there before the civil war?

I wonder how well this route will do !

Hi Braulio, yes it was mentioned here on a.net before:
IB To Start New Route To Algiers (by Bullpitt Nov 24 2006 in Civil Aviation)

The brand new international terminal in Algiers will have more traffic and carriers! The IB flight to Algiers will have (already have) a strong demand in business class.

sorry couldn't find it before.
However the thead was more to ask if IB had flown before and if there are really many business travellers between the two countries. I guess the tourist demand is bigger for Spain than for Algeria

Probably not many tourists on that route. EU citizens need a visa for Algeria which cannot be obtained upon arrival. And Algeria is not a popular destination for tourists (it's not like Morocco or Tunesia). The route is focused on business travellers, but also VFR traffic.

IB already operated that route a long time ago.

Another new destination for IB is Bucharest, Romania.

Starting in March 3rd, Iberia will fly to Bucharest on Saturdays and Sundays using A320s.

I don't know, although what you say makes sense.

A special fare of €206 (all included) is now being offered for those flights (MAD-OTP-MAD).

Saludos.

Having Romania in the EU is a good chance to increase the services.

Besides there is a great deal of Romanians living in Spain, and ethnic traffic is an important part of business for Spanish carriers.

Maybe IB can consider flying also to SOF, as Bulgaria has also joined the EU...

They in about 1973 and 1977 operated into both Algiers and Oran .
