Northwest Airlines still has the A330 on option order but it will be a while until they get them.

Northwest Airlines will be putting more McDonnel Douglas DC-10 aircraft in it's fleet. I don't get why Northwest Airlines is doing that if they want an aircraft like the DC-10, They should order the MD-11 and save it for a couple more years.

It seems that Northwest is doing more to fix it's domesitc fleet with all the 757-200's, A319's and A320's it has on order and not doing anything about it's international fleet but they are getting more old DC-10 aircraft in it's fleet. NWA has 10+ 747-400's on order but will be only getting 2 in the next 2 years.

I think Northwest Airline should order the MD-11 rather than putting more older DC-10 aircraft in it's fleet.

I'm sure the airline would like to order them too, but it requires more $$$ which they don't really have right now.

MD-11

They are interested in KLM's MD-11 which KLM is unhappy with. They might get rid of them if KLM can find a suitable replacement.

We will have to wate and see

I heard that KLM likes their MD-11s and plans to keep them for quite some time.

This is more proof to the name Northworst.
I also heard that KLM is going to keep their
MD11's now. FedEx approched them in 97
and they were rejected. Also the Northworst
stike last year could have prevented them from
ordering those A330's your talking about.

Hmm...buying DC-10s instead of MD-11s. Consider these factors:

1) NW is pretty experienced with maintaining a DC-10 fleet. They have no experience with MD-11 at all even though they are "kind of" similar, especially the MD-11 electronics.

2) I think buying DC-10s is a SHORT-TERM solution to its problem in fleet organization. A shrink in passengers from Asia may requires DC-10s to take the place of classic 747s for a while before the arrival of new 747-400s AND the recovery from the Asian financial crisis. On the other hand, the DC-10s keep NW to be aggressive in Atlantic while waiting for the A330s to join the team. Of course, the timing is going to be pretty tricky since this is done in the middle of the financial crisis. Once the A330s and 747-400s and recovery from financial crisis are in place, DC-10s should be phased out then.

I don't think they have the A330 on options anymore. They are buying more DC-10s instead. Northwest loves their DC-10s. Good for them.

Why don't KLM and Northwest trade a MD-11 for a 747-200 or -400 for a while and see how the Md-11 works on a few on their routes
