Flashback: Continental 727 At LAX

Fri Jan 05, 2007 12:04 pm

On this early morning in November of 1993, I was atop the Theme Building at LAX when this Continental 727 in desperate need of repainting showed up to take off on Rwy 24. For as long as I remember, Continental rarely used the northern runways. So This was definitely a nice sight.

Thnaks for looking.

I still think this scheme is better than COs boring current one, but then, everything looks fab on a 727!

Flashback: To the days when you could actually spot from atop the Theme Building's Observation Deck.

I want those days back.

At some point, didn't CO use both the red contrails and black contrails on tails? I know I have seen both, but what's the story with the red versus black?

And I agree - any scheme looks good on a 727!!

CO initially used the black logo on the tail because it stood out better against the gold. They also had small "CONTINENTAL" titles on the fuselage with the same logo in red with an American flag.

I believe it was around 1986 or so when they enlargened the titles, removed the small logo, moved the flag, and reverted to the red logo on the tail.

I definately agree this livery and logo were much more interesting than what they have now. I would love to see them bring the contrail logo back in some form! But I suppose that scheme and logo represent the "bad times" and the image they were trying to change.
Every flight counts.

I had forgotten how beautiful CO's 727's were "back then". I used to see these CO 727's at TUL quite a bit, and flew on them to DEN and COS a couple of times.

These are good memories.
