News inside Republic tonight is that they were awarded the Frontier Jet Express flying contract utilizing up to 17 EMB170s.

Anyone hear more?

That would be incredibly intriguing if that be the case. Republic Airlines E170s, though operated under different certification, are owned by Republic Airways Holdings, which also owns Shuttle America, which provides E170 regional jet service as United Express for Frontier's largest competitor, United Airlines. If the rumor is true, the Republic Airways family of carriers will have contracts with:

American Airlines (dba American Connection) - Chautauqua
Continental Airlines (dba Continental Connection/Express) - Chautauqua
Delta Air Lines (dba Delta Connection) - Chautauqua/Shuttle America
Frontier Airlines (dba Frontier JetExpress) - Republic Airlines
United Airlines (dba United Express) - Chautauqua/Shuttle America
USAirways (dba USAirways Express) - Republic Airlines

All that's missing is Northwest, and who knows, they might get that contract too!

Do you think that if they are indeed going to utilize the E170's that they would install IFE? I know that it would be harder to justify the $5 for passengers when the flights are generally less than 2-3 hours, but it would be a way for them to more uniformally operate between mainline and express except the Q400's.

How hard would it be for LiveTV(B6) to get the E170 certified for the IFE since the E190 is already certified?

I think it would be absolutely great for them to utilize the E170's.

Congrats on the contract. Seems very cool. I wonder if these flights will be a junior or senior bid.

Just something to think about ... I haven't heard a thing about Shuttle America retaining or being awarded new flying for Delta Connection.

Republic is about to begin the delivery of 30 E-175s (brand-new) for USAirways.

Shuttle America flies 17 E-170s for Delta Connection.

The Republic Airlines FAM is written for two-class configuration and one-class configuration.

The S5 -170s are in two-class configuration.

Where is RW going to find 17 E-170s in any short amount of time??

Hopefully they will be brand-new  Smile But you never know!!

Just wanted to get some wheels spinning...

Anyone see whats up with the Shuttle America flying in Delta's RFP?? I haven't heard anything...

I thought only the Q400s were only for the local flights.. Can't JetExpress travel farther than the connecting states? Perhaps I'm just confused..

The RJ's currently are used for flights to LIT, FAT, GEG, etc. The Q400's will be used for flights less than 750 miles from their destination. Two different types of service and target markets.

With the new Airbus schedule for FAT, I think they would want some JetExpress to return. There are also some new Airbus aircraft joining the fleet in around 5 or 6 weeks. However I believe those will assist with the new West Coast Mexico service starting in March.

I wonder if this is something which could be included as part of the contract. When the CRJ contract with QX was developed F9 was not a pure Airbus fleet, and didn't have IFE across their mainline fleet. There was also some rush with the departure of Mesa to United, which was a good thing.

With JetBlue doing the E190 IFE there should be some commonality with the E170 systems. However just like the A318 I would imagine this would require some time for FAA approval.

However "true" it may be, it is still a rumor until it is officially confirmed.

I very hope it is true, and, once again, Frontier hinted at it in the early stages - 9/20/2006:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...4-90b7-a94784af71a4&displaylang=en

"Republic, Mesa, Air Wisconsin - there's a ton of companies" that fly regional jets, Hodas said. "We don't have any concern" about finding a replacement."

Yeah, Joe, but Mesa was a bad experience and Air Wisconsin didn't have any spare 70 seaters.

And it was Joe who also hinted at the E170:

"Frontier is open to carriers with other 70-seat planes as well, such as the Embraer 170, Hodas said."

I love those hints Frontier drops - they usually come true.

Question: will all 17 be based at DEN?

I would imagine they would, but I have a good feeling that we might see some expansions in LAX and SFO out of this. I would like to see F9 focus a little out of DEN, as the recent weather issues might be a reason for them to do this. The rumor of STL might be a little hotter than we might think.

QX and F9 mutually agreed to ending QX's JetExpress contract so QX could move the aircraft over to the Alaska system. This announcement, if, in fact, true - would be for replacement of QX and additional growth for the JetExpress program (QX has 9 planes I believe...) to be flown by Republic Airlines.

Lets wait and see! Still no official word...

Should be great for Frontier. I agree that the E170 will be a great match for the fleet and the routes that they hope to serve.

Would they consider sending some of these planes on thinner international routes to Mexico to help develop their presence there, or would these planes continue to be utilized as they are now?

republic and skywest are becoming the biggest regionals in there.. i guess this RFP bullchips are going to make the other majors to go to the cheapest is killing the industry.
And for my brothers in Skywest that got 0% increase in Brasilia, good luck for next 5 years. i just hope the inflation will be -% so that you can actually get a raise.

It doesn't appear as if they have figured out what to do with Fresno...

This means now the only flight, while on a larger aircraft, is a single RON flight to Fresno on a 319 .....a late arrival in FAT, an early morning departure out...but nothing else. No more late morning FAT departure back to DEN, or the morning departure out of DEN.

Have these new S5 routes been assigned? Because I don't know if this current setup is actually the best thing for Fresno...The seats are about the same, probably a little less, but poorer frequency. I would actually prefer it the other way....or similar. 2 EJets, as opposed to one mainline. Call me crazy, but I like the convenience....

Nothing has been determined at this time, as this is not even official. Part of the problem currently are the two CRJ's removed from the system thus causing the problems at FAT.

Someone mentioned the flying would start with these new aircraft on March 1, however who knows with how many and also if it will be a immediate change or transition over a few months. When Mesa left and Horizon came into place on 1/1/04 it was an overnight change.

I think once next week hits and this is announced officially we will get a better sense of the details.

A minimum of 2 daily flights will make more sense and I expect that they will return to that.

Jan and Feb are very low boarding months at FAT, typically the average load factor of all airlines drops to about 63-64%. Then it pops back up in March and stays in the 75-85% range.

So with 1 aircraft returning to QX in January it was not a bad time of year to have to slim down the FAT schedule but maintain seats.

What I am wondering is if it will go back up to 2 mainline, 1 mainline and 1 JetExpress or 2 JetExpress. Maybe if enough FAT flyers get a taste of F9 mainline service the bookings will show demand for 2 mainline flights.  crossfingers

That's a bit of a rush to judgement.

Since they don't yet have the E170's - and have lost 2 x CR7's back to Horizon - I don't see how they can do what you would prefer.

And since it isn't yet "official" that they will get the E170's, who knows what will happen?

Just a clarification since many people are confusing JetExpress and Express:

Frontier Express will be strictly operated by FRNT Holdings' Lynx Aviation utilizing a fleet of Q400 aircraft. Frontier JetExpress (jets) will be operated by contract regional carriers.

What no one seems to have addressed is the fact that Republic Airways Holdings is somewhat restricted in providing service at United hubs. From the company's 2005 10-K filing with the SEC:

Quote:
United may immediately terminate the code-share agreements if we operate, except pursuant to preexisting agreements with US Airways and Delta, any additional regional jets or turboprop aircraft pursuant to a marketing or code-share relationship with any party other than United to provide hub service at United’s hubs in Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C. or Seattle. We also cannot engage or attempt to engage, on its behalf or on behalf of a third party, in the business of providing air transportation at any of United’s hubs or for any carrier that has or attempts to have hub operations at any of United’s hubs, or operate any additional regional jets or turboprops with any party other than United to provide hub service at United’s hubs.

Now, the devil is always in the details, and it is certainly possible that the United codeshare agreement may only apply to Chautauqua and Shuttle America, giving Republic the ability to use its Republic Airline operating subsidiary for Frontier JetExpress service at DEN, just as SkyWest has been able to use ASA to provide Delta Connection service at LAX.

The non-compete agreement with United, I suspect, has been a barrier for many of the potential bidders for F9 JetExpress service; it probably has kept TSA/GoJets, SkyWest, and Mesa out of the running.

They better not use those on the DEN-ABQ route.

You'd love them. Great planes; I'd take one any day over the CRJ-700 that F9/QX flew to ABQ when I lived there.

I'm sure they are nice, but F9 should bring in larger aircraft to better compete with UA. United even brought in 757s during the Balloon Fiesta. I would rather fly on an A319 or an E170 than some tiny prop.
The reason New Mexico is so windy is because Texas sucks and Arizona blows.

The non-compete clause is only for Shuttle America and Chautauqua Airlines.

Furthermore, unlike most other airline's contracts - the UA contracts do not prevent, for example, Shuttle America operating an aircraft larger than the current limit in the UA pilot's scope clause.

We currently fly 70 seat -170s at Shuttle America for DL and UA. We cannot operate the 72 seat -170 at S5 because it violated (previously? I'm not sure now after the bankruptcy reorganization, etc...) the DL scope clause. However, UA's contract with us does not include that limitation.
Prepare doors for departure and cross-check.
