New PTVs For UAL?

Sat Jan 06, 2007 5:12 pm

While many airlines/aircrafts still don't offer PTVs, some others (i.e. VS) offer bigger/better PTVs. Does UAL have any plans in the future to change/upgrade the present PTVs? I was just wondering.

Rather than upgrading the size of the PTVs, UA should consider adding AVOD. NW and US already offer AVOD on their A330s. Delta has AVOD on many 757s, one 767-400, and some 767-300ERs in BusinessElite, and will soon be added to more 767-400s, 737-800s, and domestic 767-300s. CO plans to install AVOD on their 757-200s and 777s.

United will introduce AVOD in their new United First and Business class internationally starting in the last quarter of 2007. The 747 will get new flat panel screens in Economy. The video system in Economy will run on a hard drive rather than tape. United will not invest in PTVs for the 747 because of the added cost by reinforcing the cabin floor and the added weight of the equipment. United can not justify the expense for economy upgrades at this time. I haven't heard any news about economy upgrades for the international fleet of 767 or 777.
Lower your expectations! You will always be pleasantly surprised!

If United orders the 747-8 or A380, I am sure that they will be equipped with PTVs. At least United is giving the IFE on the 747 an upgrade. Since Delta does not currently intend on adding PTVs to the economy section of the 767-300ERs, I wish that Delta would at least replace the projectors and CRT screens on them with LCDs.

That would cost a ton of cash that UAL doesnt need to spend right now on TV's. Maybe their new fleet type will have it, 787?

Singapore airlines has it in their 747's and AC's A345's had it too. Why does it take a longer time for UA to add AVOD ontp their PTV's? However, I wasn't very happy with AC's AVOD, mine froze everytime I tried to rewind it.

Thanks
Brad

Let me see, UA just exited BK-11 after almost 3years. UA can’t afford to update their Y product like SQ or AC, they have smaller fleets size compare to UA. The B747-400 that UA operating is not as young as other competitors out there so for them up add IFE’s they would required to redo the floors and so on. Thus, would involved lots of cash, which UA can use on other more important matters. Besides, only AC A345’s is equipped with IFE’s. Same goes for UA. All their international B777-200ER’s are equipped with IFE’s in Y and a few of the B767-300ER’s.

It sounds like NW is investing in a new interior that would put PTVs in every widebody in prep for the 787.

If UA is going to do D checks on widebodies would it really be that much of a difference to upgrade their products? There are new wireless systems that are lighter that would be expensive in the short term but save money in the long run. (I think this is what NW is looking at.)
My name is Centrair but HND is closer. Let's Japanese Aviation!
