RG's Vintage L-188

I remember that at the time RG retired the L-188's, one of those aircraft went to a museum. I do not remember if that was RG's own "company museum" or if it went to some other "outside" source.

If indeed they do have their own company museum does anyone know anything about its disposition?
Or, maybe certain of its vintage aircraft are spead about at various museum's around the country?

Also, I wonder who will control RG's archives?

Hi IE,

One L-188 (PP-VJM) was placed at the Aeronautics Museum located at Campo dos Afonsos AFB (Rio de Janeiro) and all the other were sold abroad, mainly to Africa and IIRC, to Canada. It seems that Varig's Dragon Rapide was also inherited by this same museum.

Varig has one small museum at Porto Alegre, attached to what used to be their maintenance centre down there, but the only aircraft there is a Douglas DC-3 plus lots of memorabilia dating back to the 50s (I had access to part of it in the past and it is well preserved). With all this turnmoil the fortunes of this items is not certain.

On a side note, I have it from a reliable source that most of their photographic archives were lost due improper storage and care. These archives were at Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont airport, in a humid basement. Hardly a place to keep 40+ years old slides  boggled 

Unfortunately, historical preservation in Brazil, in all aspects, not only aviation, is not something seen very seriously.

Varig does have a DC-3 on display at POA, but I don't know about any Electras. When Varig retired them they sold them to Zaire.

They do have a museum, but I think it's something small. Mostly early aircraft engines, mock-ups, models of RG's fleet, and a DC-3 and B733 cockpit.

Lots of questions if someone has the time to answer:

When exactly did they stopped flying the Electras? Was the last service the SDU-CGH shuttle? How many seats did it have? Did the other companies flying the shuttle back then (Vasp ???) also flew Electras?

I think I rmember taking a shuttle flight in the late 80s in an Electra - is that possible?

Where is Campo dos Afonsos? Is that near GIG? There is an airforce prop plane near the entrace to the airbase near GIG (next to the Hertz facility). Is that an Electra?

The date was 05.JAN.1992 for scheduled flights. Some farewell flights were made on 06.JAN.1992, though. 15 years and 1 day ago.

Seating was around 90 seats, but sometimes this was limited due performance reasons. All the Electras were operated in pool by Varig, Vasp and TransBrasil, with RG/QD(later TR) and VP flight numbers, but the crew members were all Varig.

Campo dos Afonsos is not very far from GIG, actually you fly-by it when on approach to GIG runway 10. GoogleEarth tells me the straight line between them is around 10 miles.

Has been a while since I went outside GIG, but there's no Electra at the air force base, probably a HS748.

Does anyone know the reg of the B737 by any chance?.

Also is there any possibility that this is the same L188 that appeared as Drax Airfreight in Moonraker?.

Although a pool of operation between RG,VP and TR, the call sign of the flights was always RG6..

The flights of shuttle service were operated by 03 flight figures and started always with 6.

If I recall correctly, the DC-3 was actually owned by an association of RG employees, painted in the old RG livery. They used to take tourists and enthusiasts on sightseeing flights, with flight attendants and pilots wearing the vintage uniforms.

you just described pretty much everything on this planet. history and the care for it is always the first things to go when a corporation is allowed to run rampant. This is why there is so little history left in alot of areas anymore.

sure it's easy to preserve a 8000 year old castle, but even those fall victim to yuppy luxury condos.

I'm fearful of what happens to planes in the jet age here. look at how so many classics (B29's, etc) have been crushed and cut up, and we have some DC10's angling for the wrecker also.

by the time the plane is heavily used and abused by the airlines, it's a rolling wreck and I imagine restoring it is hell.

if finding a period gun for a B29 is a pain, imagine if someone wanted to restore a 707 (assuming any are left) and find original seats, pillows, safety cards, flash lights, etc for it.

Don't know. Personally, I'll take "not perfect, but pretty darn good and here you are" over elysian perfection that we just won't achieve in this life.
