US Airlines Flying 737/320 In Asia .

Sun Jan 07, 2007 7:08 am

Hello,

I´ve returned from my trip to NGO , if you want to read the trip report you´re welcome : Frankfurt-Nagoya Economy And Bussines ... 59 Pics! (by LHStarAlliance Jan 6 2007 in Trip Reports)

There in NGO I saw a continental 737 taking off and Ive seen many Pics of 737/320 in Asia , why are they there ?

Was it maybe Continental Micronesia ?

Because flying a 737 from the US to Japan is a bit far ...

CO flies them around Micronesia and I believe NW flies A320s around North Asia, as well.

where are the crews for the CO and NW intra-Asia flights based? I presume CO Mike has a GUM base but I can't imagine that NW has any narrowbody pilots based out of the US? Do they deadhead them from the US?

Actually, NW no longer has A320’s based in Asia, they have now replaced them with Boeing 757-200’s.

Northwest Airlines has broad fifth freedom rights beyond Japan. They are permitted to fly from the USA to Japan, and then on to another point carrying local Japanese passengers as well as those originating in the USA. A change of equipment is allowed, so Northwest chooses to base some 757’s in Asia and use them for flights from Tokyo to Guangzhou, Busan and Nagoya. These 757’s also operate NW’s flights from Osaka and Nagoya to Guam and Saipan.

One other US carrier also has these rights - United Airlines. However, they operate all services beyond Japan with the same (wide-body) equipment that flew the USA-Japan flight. When the treaty was signed, in return, JAL was given broad beyond USA rights, which they currently use for their Tokyo-New York JFK-Sao Paulo route.

We have CS flying twice a day with 737s to GUM and once a day to HNL with a 767.

NW used to fly A320s out of NRT but not they are 757s.
NW flies 757s on...
NRT-CAN
NRT-NGO-SPN
NGO-GUM
I think they fly one or two out of KIX as well goign to SPN or GUM.

If you noticed, there are tons of 737s at NGO. KE, NH, OZ, and CA all fly them in and out of NGO.

Here is a complete time table of all departures and arrivals from NGO ALl NGO Flights (EXCEL 176kb)

Also glad you liked your visit to NGO. Hope you come back again sometime soon.

I couldn't remember if this was a 757 or A330. Thanks.

You know there are not a lot of 757s flying around Japan. I think NW is the only one. Does anyone else fly 757s to Japan or in Japan?

You are right, there are hardly any 757’s at all flying in/to Japan.

IIRC, Air China uses the 757 on one or two of their Tokyo to Beijing flights and Shanghai Airlines uses the 757 on their Osaka to Shanghai route. These are the only ones I can think of besides NW. I never realised there were so few.

Since Guam is a US territory, CO Micronesia has long had rights as a US carrier to operate between GUM (and HNL) and points in Japan and other countries in Asia. Those are 3rd/4th freedom traffic rights for CO. As has already been mentioned, NW's services beyond Japan are 5th freedom (except 3rd/4th freedom like CO between Japan and GUM).

I would expect NW's and UA's extensive 5th freedom authority beyond Japan which they have had since the end of WWII (in UA's case inherited from Pan Am when UA bought PA's Pacific routes) must be the most valuable 5th freedom rights anywhere in the world.

woooo... never seen a CA 757 at NGO in the afternoon. Usually this is a 737 isn't it? Must be an upgrade for their PEK via Qingdao service.

As Centrair noted, NW 757s are no stranger to NGO. From NGO they fly to GUM, SPN and NRT.

Pan Am based some 727s when they operated in the region but UA doesn't take same approach as PA or NW.

Quoting Centrair (Reply 10):

China Southern sends 757s on the CAN-KIX/NRT route when loads are too light for its 777s.
Royal Nepal operates twice weekly 757 service on the Kathmandu-(PVG)-KIX route. PVG is just a fuel stop.
Omni has seasonal charters and ATA has military charters. That's about it.
