El Al TLV-PEK Routing

Sun Jan 07, 2007 12:30 pm

Does anyone know what routing El Al's flight from TLV to PEK might take? By it's most direct routing, it appears to fly over Northern Iraq and Iran. Would they avoid overflying any country on zone on this trip?

From TLV to Turkey via the Mediterranean, then eastward via the Caucasus region and Kazakhstan before reaching China, hence bypassing Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran. Not so much of a detour once it passes Turkey.

Similarly if you plot the shortest route to BOM or BKK, it has to pass Saudi Arabia. LY got round this by flying south via the Red Sea before turning eastwards.

Kind of a pain in the arse, really. I guess it's not a ton of extra time and fuel, but it must add up.

I don't think anything can beat SA's routes from like, what was it, JNB-LHR that had to fly out over the atlantic around the bulge of africa during apartheid due to their not being allowed by many african nations to overfly them.

Just out of curiousity, do any of Saudi Arabian's flight's ideal paths take them over israel?

The detour EL-Al does on its way to BOM or BKK add about 3 to 4 hours of flight.

The ideal route from Riyadh to Athens (for example) takes you directly over Israel but no flights to / from Saudi Arabia passes over Israel, no matter which airline it is.
The only flights that cross Israel are Jordanian flights. None Jordanian airlines don't fly over Israel when they fly to / from Amman.
