Hong Kong Airlines Eyes Services To Major Mainland

Mon Jan 08, 2007 10:34 am

Hong Kong Airlines, formerly called CR Airways, is mulling the launch of passenger flights to Beijing and Shanghai after Cathay Pacific Airways started a service to Shanghai last month.

Chairman Ren Weidong said the airline has applied for rights to fly to 15 to 20 mainland and Southeast Asian destinations, and could be flying to Dalian, Qingdao and Shijiazhuang this year if it obtains licenses from Hong Kong's Air Transport Licensing Authority.

I certainly hope they begin HKG-PVG and HKG-PEK.

If they are permitted, they want to start the following domestic and international services between the winter 2006 and autumn 2007:

- Dalian - Qingdao - Xiamen - Luoyang
- Shijiazhuang - Wuhan - Taiyuan - Shanghai
- Beijing - Chengdu - Xian - Nanjing
- Fuzhou - Seoul - Taegu - Pusan

If all those Chinese destinations materialise, Hong Kong will operate 18 domestic routes.

At the moment, they operate a shuttle bus between Tianjin (which they serve daily from HKG) to Beijing.

What kind of prices do they offer?

I don't like it's website, not least because it's booking facility is very primitive: you enter your details, submit them, then somebody might reply. Useful.

I also note that when I type Hong Kong Airlines into Google's search engine, the actual Hong Kong Airlines appears on the second page while CX appears at the top of the first.

CX always is the first in our mind (Hong Kong People) to represents Hong Kong (N8). I dont think N8 could represent Hong Kong even called "Hong Kong Airlines", they just a part of the mianland chinese carrier called "Hainan Airlines".

Perhap not at the moment. I think the key for Hong Kong Air is the service. If they can provide CX level of service, it will make its place in Hong Kong. Also since it is part of Hainan, don't be surprised with 'special' treatment from the central government in terms of route/frequency authorities. For example, if it is granted am exclusive HKG-Lhasa...I am not sure CX or KA could complete.
