Quoting Brilondon (Reply 46): This is a silly comparison you made just to be argumentative as there have never been any such plans for London. The express ways I cited come from an article in the Dec. 1st, 1959 Globe and Mail. They showed five different expressways that were planned for Toronto at a cost of $60 million dollars to complete. |
The only reason it hasn't been proposed in London is because insane ideas are more quickly dismissed in London. One only needs to see the CAA's Lake Ontario freeway plans to realize that insanity isn't so quickly dismissed when discussing Toronto freeway ideas. And the reason they were stopped was not because of a shortage of money... it was because the neighbourhoods the freeways were going to destroy rebelled.
The airport rail project will happen, it is a question of how long from now and in what form. Hopefully it will not take long and will be in a useful affordable form that maximizes its potential not only for a few people going between a flight and downtown, but also for the many people that commute to the airport area for their jobs each day.
Quoting NorthStarDC4M (Reply 44): Transit in this city is a political tool, it has nothing to do with helping the long term economy of the city, or helping commuters. |
I agree with the statement but the St.Clair ROW and SRT replaced by the subway ideas seem sensible to me. The foolish plans are taking the subway to a field in Vaughan and building the SRT in the first place with a mode of transportation not found elsewhere in the city. When building a fleet in the airline industry people understand you try and standardize on a few models for maintenance and purchasing efficiencies... for some reason transit is a dumping ground for as many fleet combinations as possible.
