AirTran Airways Offers Flights for Return of RARE Teal Flamingos

- Airline Releases 3,000 Flamingos to Celebrate New Service to Ft. Lauderdale, but Needs Four Back -

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), today announced new nonstop flights from Akron-Canton Airport to Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and unveiled a flock of pink flamingos, scattered throughout the Ohio cities of Cleveland, Akron and Canton. Four strategically placed grand-prize teal flamingos, who answer to the names Sandy, Shelly, Sunny and Shiny, will win each of their lucky finders a set of tickets on AirTran Airways.

AirTran Airways and Akron-Canton Airport will pepper Northeast Ohio with 3,000 pink plastic yard flamingos -- along with four teal misfits -- as a tribute to the airline's nonstop routes between Akron-Canton and Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Tampa and Orlando. Snowbirds can do some online "bird watching" at http://www.airtran.com/flamingos for clues to the location of the four flighty teal featherheads. The clues will be the key to winning a pair of roundtrip tickets on AirTran Airways.

"We are tickled pink to announce the expansion of our route map to include direct flights from Akron-Canton to various destinations in the Sunshine State," said Tad Hutcheson, AirTran Airways' vice president of marketing and sales. "Now vacationers looking to trade their ski jackets for swimsuits can flock to Florida in comfort while enjoying AirTran Airways' Business Class seating, free XM Satellite Radio and the nation's youngest all-Boeing fleet."

Eagle-eyed Ohioans should be on the lookout for the four wayward flamingos between January 4 and January 12, 2007, when the contest ends (visit http://www.airtran.com for contest rules). Jet-setters may have to go out on a limb in their flamingo search, but AirTran Airways A+ Rewards members can log on to http://www.airtran.com/flamingos and receive clues as to the whereabouts of the teal flamingos every day. Who knew bird-watching could be so much fun?

The following nonstop flights will be available between Akron-Canton Airport and Ft. Lauderdale Airport, effective January 4, 2007:

About Akron-Canton Airport:

Akron-Canton Airport opened its new, spacious, four-gate passenger concourse, from which AirTran Airways operates its big jet flights, in early May. The concourse is the centerpiece of the airport's $60 million, five-year STAR expansion project. Other elements of STAR included longer runways, a new baggage claim wing, additional car parking and a food court with national brands. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's fourth-quarter Domestic Airline Fares Consumer Report, CAK ranked as the sixth-least- expensive airport in the United States. Additional information, including flight reservations, directions, real-time arrivals and departures, and a blog port is available at http://www.akroncantonairport.com, CAK's new web portal. FL has quite an operation at CAK now don't they? The only things they are missing are flights to BWI and MDW.

Perhaps with the delivery of more 737's they could free up a couple of 717's to do a BWI & MDW run in the near future? I believe the real problem for those routes would be gate space at MDW though. FL knows they are limited on gate space thus the possible reasoning for the MKE/YX merger. BWI they could pull off though.

There is still gate space in MDW. They will start MIA on thursday and by dropping EWR, they could open new routes. They should also stop flights to MSP and start CAK. There is too much competition on the MDW-MSP route. On Sunday I flew ATL-MDW on a B717 that continues to MSP. The flight was full on the ATL-MDW leg and it had only 28 passengers on the MDW-MSP leg...

Remember that FL does well at CAK by drawing a lot of traffic away from CLE. CLE has more than a dozen daily flights on both CO and WN to both MDW and BWI. FL would be crazy to start service to either city, as they won't draw traffic away from CLE. As the price of fuel is coming down, lets hope for a return of LAS service. I think CAK-DFW has potential as well. AA and CO both run RJ's on the route, and the business fares are crazy on the route. CAK leadership would like DCA service, but now that Rep Regula is in the minority, I'm not sure he'll have the pull to free up a few slots.

I was going to fly DTW-FLL in March on FL, but maybe now I'll drive down to CAK instead....

Remember, some of these routes - like Boston, Miami, and Charlotte - were added because ATA's departure left them without non-stop flights to Chicago Midway. I don't see them adding much to Midway except San Francisco.

Agreed. And if the YX deal goes thru, that service will be moved to MKE. CAK-MKE could be a possibility then, I think FL sees MKE as Chicago-North, and plans to pull traffic from the northern suburbs... But I digress..
