AN225 In CGN Right Now

Tue Jan 09, 2007 7:29 am

Just in case any of you wants to know, the AN 225 arrived in CGN today to pick up some heavy equipment. It is supposed to take off tomorrow noon, as far as I know.

This is not the first time the AN 225 visits cologne. The reason is that CGN has by far the longest runway around, with its 3800 metres it is long enough for all needs.

Years ago, I saw this monster on approach over the city of Cologne. Alone the sound of the engines is impressing.

I understand that the Russians have a second AN-225 that was never completed that is now being finished. But I gather that there is no overwhelming demand for large numbers of these magnificent planes.

The operator of that second AN-225 would probably be the Antonov Design Bureau, which has its own cargo division, so I'm sure that if the second Mrya is finished, it will supplement the first one and all the other AN-124s currently flying for Antonov.

When you guys finally learn to distinguish between Russia and Ukraine? Antonov design bureau is not a Russian company.

It was at one time (well, Soviet - close enough!) so many Europeans refer to Antonovs as being 'Russian'.

That is ridiculous as any number of European countries would take offense to having parts of their territories routinely referred to as their former occupier; not to say this doesn't happen, but at least make some effort! And people complain about American geography knowledge...

The same reason we think Boeing is a European aircraft, better an English-French -Spanish aircraft.  Wink

Just kidding you. You are right with this. I live and Hungary and they really get offended.
