UA At BTR Why Not?

Wed Jan 10, 2007 12:12 am

With the large increase in population in BTR UA would be profitable. Would it make sense to cut a few flights at MSY and start up at BTR?

I completely agree. I remember two of my friends telling me that an enormous amount of people have since moved to BTR from MSY. Although it came as a shock to BTR, they are trying to handle the capacity as best as they can, and I believe they will accomodate as best as possible. They will need the service. Starting service will help the city's economy, provide more jobs, etc. Great observation buddy.

Considering that the load factors at MSY are higher than ever, that's probably not the way to go.

Also, traffic at BTR has slacked off recently. Airlines are in fact pulling back some of the flights that were added post-Katrina.

Yes it has. The airlines that went mainline to BTR right after the storm (AA and DL) are now back to RJ's only, and several of the new routes...BTR-STL/LGA/EWR for example....have been discontinued.

BTR now is pretty much the same capacity wise as BTR before the storm, with the exception of of one DL Connection flight to MCO and DCA, and one AA Eagle to ORD.

UA won't pull New Orleans flights and put them in BTR...in fact UA will be upgrading one of the ORD E70's back to a 733 come next month.

TODAY’S HEADLINES / January 9, 2007

Metro Council to vote on incentive package for Denver flights
The Metro Council is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a $1 million incentive package aimed at luring an airline to offer flights from Baton Rouge Metro Airport to Denver. Ronnie Pickard, airport spokesman, says Denver is one of the better hubs because so many airlines fly into the city and it offers a chance for connecting flights farther west and outside the United States. "That's our biggest void of service," Pickard says. By offering $1 million, Metro Airport will be able to help an airline offset the start-up costs of establishing service. Getting funding from the community to subsidize air service is a trend in the industry, Pickard says. Earlier this year Anthony Marino, director of aviation, said Metro Airport was $1 million away from bringing in a discount air carrier. Pickard says the Denver incentive would be open to the first airline willing to establish service from Baton Rouge to the Rockies, discount carrier or not.
In other airport news, Mayor-President Kip Holden held a press conference this morning to speak on behalf of Delta Air Lines, which has a significant presence at the local airport. Delta is fighting a hostile takeover bid from US Airways. The airline is lining up leaders in various communities to speak out against the US Airways deal, Pickard says.

Nah, don' t do that. Not good for MSY at all. Add more flights. Be competitive. Don't cut to add. Just add. If it doesn't do well, which MSY does, cut it. In this case, just add to BTR and leave MSY alone.

Not at all, particularly seeing that MSY is an excellent station for United, particularly their LAX-MSY movie shuttles.

Not to mention their return to mainline on LAX-MSY.

The E170's are here just for Mardi Gras, and then they become a 170 again. MSY should be in the pool for more service, not decreased service. They have done a good job stealing pax from the neighboring BTR and GPT.
