PHX Looking To Have One Of Busiest Days On Record

Wed Jan 10, 2007 1:45 am

Just saw the news this morning, with Sky Harbor officials speculating this could be the busiest day in airport history, over 40 charters departing, along with all the regularly scheduled flights...

Ok, wait for the RJ to pass, cleared to push tail south Mike, and you're cleared to spin #2 in the push.

Awesome for PHX. I keep an eye on TZ flights through:

Looks like they are getting their fair share of charters for the season.

Hopefully there are a lot of spotters out watching!

What's the Florida team flying home on today? IIRC they took AA out there over the regular Delta charter.

Actually one of the most interesting planes was the Ryan Internation 757 painted in a Ghana International color scheme, bringing/taking Florida fans from/to GNV.

Got a TriStar there too!

And, I believe the Tristar came from Shannon, Ireland !

Many Allegiant and Champion Air leaving today. A few flights from IWA as well.

Saw the Pan Am 727 and Omni 757 a few days ago. Some aircraft stayed for the weekend, while many flew in today from various locales. DL had a few charters and used a 767 today on #989.
Don't just stand there, go get some glue!

I'm with you. I was at PHX for a couple of hours yesterday and saw that along with 2 MG 722's and a 738 for a German charter airline who's name I can't recall right now. Saw that Ryan air near the cargo stands too.

Ryan International also had planes in the Futura, and Aerosur color schemes for the charter work.

Pretty sure they used this AA B738

There was a picture in the USA TODAY newspaper when they arrived on JAN 2 and showed them getting off an AA aircraft.

Team was on the AA 738. American also has a 763 to GNV today #9420. Guessing that the 763 is probably the biggest passenger jet into Gainesville normally.

The special planes I saw last night when I arrived at the airport and then today in the area were limited to a DL 767-300 and an MG 727-200 (which was special because it's the first type of plane I ever flew on, six years ago). I'm sure there were more. The airport vehicle traffic didn't seem too heavy when I went through - however, I did see a bunch of cars in Tempe flying Florida and Ohio State flags. Why they were in Tempe I have no idea. They weren't just local boosters either - their cars had Florida and Ohio plates. Considering that the game was out in Glendale (west of Phoenix and the airport) and that Tempe is east of the airport. For the record I'm kind of glad the game wasn't at Sun Devil, because that would have made my trip to Tempe from the airport last night a really big hassle. Instead, it was very easy.

Do they really think today will be busier than back when the Super Bowl was in Tempe? Is that just because of the normal growth in air traffic since then?

Part of it is that College Football has many more fans of the two schools, who often come in on charters. For the Super Bowl, there are a lot less fans of the various schools and instead corporate big-wigs, so there is a lot less demand for charter aircraft (I seem to remember when the Pats were in Jacksonville for the Super Bowl, DL upgraded their CRJs to mainline for a day, AirTran added a couple of 717s on BOS-JAX, and I think US Airways had a 737 go non-stop as well). 5 extra flights are nothing compared to the number of fan charters.
