Syrian Air

Mon Jul 17, 2000 8:06 pm

Hi! One of my relative would like to go to Syrie and he would like to know if Syrian Air (the national air carrier) is a safe airline: do you know its fleet, safety reccords, ... Have you ever fly on this airline? I can't find any web site.
Thanks!

Hi,

Their fleet consists of A320, B727, B747SP ...only the A320s are new...I've heard alot of bad stuff, personally I'd choose another airline...

Regards,
Marco

I didn't fly them myself, but heard their service was not great (on board and on time).
They have quite an old but interesting fleet. Their 727s and 747SPs are getting long on the tooth, and they also have some Tu-134s and Tu-154s, but they are parked most of the times, only used to local and former eastblock destianations (Moscow, Budapest). To western destinations, the A-320 is most likely being used.
Their safetyrecord is OK, though. No crashes since 1964 ! But OK, they are quite small, too.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

I can't recall them ever having an accident, so they can't be doing too badly. Plus, they've flown through several wars, such as the Lebanese troubles 75-91 (Lebanon is a Syrian de facto protectorate) and various skirmishes with Israel - all without losing a life or an aircraft. They have a couple of 747SPs which is pretty cool. I'd go for it, I used to use them for cheap seats to India (the SPs go to Bombay) all the time and I never got a complaint, only praise. And if you're transiting Damascus, try and break your journey cos Syria is a very interesting country with very friendly people and the most delicious food ever. Have a good flight!
