PBS Report On Virtual Rollout Of The 787

Wed Jan 10, 2007 3:25 pm

The NewsHour on PBS did an excellent Science Unit report on the virtual rollout of the 787, placing a lot of emphasis on the Dassault software used to design the plane and how it enables them (hopefully) to avoid costly mistakes.

Quote:
With the production of newer, sleeker planes like Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, airplane manufacturers are entering a new era of production using virtual technologies in the design and manufacturing processes.

The pictures were excellent. Unfortunately, only an audio version is available at

But it's still worth listening to.

Also a full transcript:

MICHAEL BOYD: ...when you have multiple suppliers from multiple places across the globe, it gives you a lot of leverage, in terms of bidding it out. It also gives you a lot of risk if something goes wrong.

LEE HOCHBERG: Boeing says that's just the modern reality of doing business.

MIKE BAIR: Is there additional risk? Sure, there is. But with that risk, there's reward. And we think that that's a -- we think that's a great trade.

You know, the world is global. And for us to think that, you know, all the best ideas were here in the United States, it's a little shortsighted. It's not true.

And we've proven it to ourselves, certainly, on this program, where we look at what each of our partners have brought to the table to help us build this airplane. And they've each brought something unique that we could not have found anywhere else.
Our eyes are open, our eyes are open--wide, wide, wide...
