MidAmerica Airport To Soon Have Cargo Flights....

Thu Jan 11, 2007 12:43 am

According to the Belleville paper, MidAmerica Airport could have cargo planes flying in June. The company that has leased the cargo building says they have a found a cargo carrier to fly in and out the airport. They have not released the name of the company. This is good news for MidAmerica Airport that has struggled to find passenger carriers if it comes true.

It's a good location for a cargo operation.
Within 30 minutes of most of St. Louis (in the dead of night when most cargo moves) plus within easy driving distance of Chicago, Indianapolis, Cinicinatti, Louisville, Memphis and Kansas City for trucks to make overnight deliveries.

Probably just slightly west of where you would want a cargo hub for a majority of the population on the east coast, but since "out west" is growing anyway, it's ideal.

I've often wondered about MidAmerica. The article says it was a $330 million boondoggle.

Why was it built, who built it, and why has it been such a flop?

Quoting BoomBoom (Reply 2):

It's been Scott AFB (BLV) for years and became a joint-use airport in more recent years. I think the boondoggle reference was with respect to the improvements that they made (like building a terminal) hoping that airlines would flock there to avoid the delays at STL. The TW/AA pulldown at STL and opening of the new 11/29 at STL both served to all but eradicate ATC delays at STL, so the commercial side of BLV just sits there....
