Chances Aeropostal Being Nationalized?

Thu Jan 11, 2007 4:03 am

Booked my flight to Maracaibo via Copa Air for this coming February and it got me to thinking.

After reading the news of Chavez's swearing in and the recent government takeovers of the telephone and electrical companies in Venezuela is there any possibility, remote or not, or does Chavez have any intentions to re-nationalize Aeropostal?

I remember that Aeropostal once was a national airline but was privatized in the '90s but does anyone perhaps in Venezuela know if there any other governmental interests in taking back Aeropostal.

Knowing him, I would not discard it, but so far I don't think that is in his agenda... he's probably too busy dealing with the telecoms and utilities, and bashing foreign dignataries. And there are a couple of presidential elections in LatAm during 2007, so be sure he will also be busy funding radical left-wingers in the corresponding countries. Add to that his permanent coaching of Evo Morales and his dispensing of cheap oil and gas to poor countries in the region for political reasons... I don't know where he finds the time to say and do so much crap.

I don't think so. They have (the government) their own airline (Conviasa) which I believe they will focus on. In fact, VO is offering by far the best fares and service on the shuttle service between CCS and MAR and also PMV.

If they plan to nationalize Aeropostal I believe it would be a bad idea, since this airline already has a bad reputation, Conviasa, on the other hand, is new and fresh and it is seen with good eyes thanks to their cheap fares and not that old fleet.

The Electricity and Telephone companies are getting nationalized under the reasons that they are too much of a critical infrastructure to be in private hands.
Aeropostal is not critical for the nation's interest(specially if you consider how Ramiz managed it), so no, it won't happen.

Give him some time, he has a lot of work to do this year.... But maybe in two or three years you will only see orange tails at CCS domestic terminal, just wait until he reailzes the potential of Conviasa and wants to get rid of all of those airlines that rip off the people with their overpriced tickets    Wink

Either Conviasa or Aeropostal, I will keep flying Copa to Maracaibo.

If the price of oil keeps falling maybe he won't have enough cash to buy out companies and keep the S. American stock markets in a frenzy?

We can only hope.

In fact, latam stock markets have fall pretty much this year, mainly because the price of oil falling and Chavez nice comments and announcements, which make every investor around here a bit nervous. Oil would have to fall into the range of U$ 20-30 per barrel for Chavez to start feeling pressure into his pockets, otherwise, he'll keep having enough cash to keep throwing away for political reasons. Just my  twocents  (At this right moment oil is trading at $53.50, ad seems to keep falling below the 50s).

He will get into many economic aspects of Venezuela's private economy...just give him some time. I read carefully his possesion speech, and is was extremly socialist. Chavez won't surprise me anymore, I hope.

Cheers
