AR Hub In SJU?

Thu Jan 11, 2007 11:56 am

This is cut from Wikipedia.com

Quote:
An expansion plan in 2004 included the creation of subsidiaries in Chile, Uruguay, and Bolivia, as well as a hub at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which would allow the airline to become one of the biggest groups in Latin America. The airline is now owned by Grupo Marsans (92%), the government of Argentina (5%), and employees (3%) and employs 7,016 staff (at January 2005).

I know Wikipedia tends to not be accurate, but is there any basis to this?

That was the plan a few years ago.
Also a hub in Athens (???) and the creation of Aerolineas del Peru. And probably many, many other promises over the years.

At least they are still flying...

I can imagine how attractive will be for Southamericans to fly to SJO (an U.S. airport) go thru immigration and customs and make connections to other U.S. Cities.
If AR wants to start a Puertorican airline, still connecting @ SJU won't be as attractive as @ MIA.
If grupo Marsans wants to expand in The Caribbean, they could try buying in VH, JM and BW.

You mean SJU not SJO. And SJU is not the chaotic mess that MIA is, not to mention PTY is not doing to hot either when it comes to handling a large bank of flights coming in at peak times.

How maximized are the facilities at SJU? I was there a few years back and between AA/Eagle it was hopping. I've always thought AA could add more South American service from SJU, but outside CCS, is there decent traffic elsewhere? Is there enough traffic to sustain a second hub/focus city operation?

Aerolineas can do fine with seasonal flight to the caribbean, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Isla Margarita plus the regular flight to Cancun.
A hub in San Juan means competing against AA, and that's suicidal.
I think it's crucial for Aerolineas to find a solid partner, and soon. A good one would be AA ( but, I see CO/DL as more feasible candidates) and AF in Europe.

Sorry about the typo. PTY? what does PTY have to do with this topic?

I think AA applied for SJU-PMV but don't really know if it's operating.
About other Southamerican destiantions for AA out of SJU, I would guess the attractive ones could be: MAR, BOG, weekend SJO (Costa Rica is popular destination for Puertoricans) plus GEO/PBM (because the AA SJU hub).
It would be nice to see AA expand its SJU hub a bit more and fly B737 between Puerto Rico and Northern Brazil, I'm thinking Brazil - SJU - BOS/PVD here, but I'm affraid Brazilians will want to connect in MIA when traveling between mainland U.S. and their country.

Most passengers try to avoid MIA. It is a big O&D destination, but when it comes to connecting there, it is best avoided.

Having said that most passengers would prefer SJU over MIA due to the size and easier walking distances. Unless you mean the Brazilians have family in Miami to stopover for a couple of days.

Sort of related to the topic...

Didn't AR operate some 727-100s around the Caribbean and also Toronto to feed the MIA-EZE flights in the late 90s?

Maybe they wanted to try the same thing in SJU?

I do remember plans that AR had of starting an EZE-SJU flight with the A340-200 but I never heard anything about a hub at SJU.

yeah, and they never did start EZE-SJU either. South and Central American destinations from SJU havent quite grown from the past years either. The Only thing available is AA to CCS and CM to PTY. Most Pax going to south/central American choose to go on CM via PTY. Sometimes CM have charters and/or seasonal flights out of SJU to SJO and GUA. TACA also comes to SJU during the summer in a red eye flight to SJO. Mexicana Also tries SJU-CUN/MEX in the summer. LAN tried, never could. To SCL. AA did fly to Margarita Island on the summer season last year. Did once heard IB planned on doing SJU-PTY/SJO/GUA/CCS but never came even close. When they closed MIA Hub.
