Movement Impact Due To Virgin Fuel Saving Trials?

Thu Jan 11, 2007 6:30 pm

Hey A.Netter's......

Just did a quick search and noticed this has been brought up before...
Virgin Atlantic's announcement that it would commence trialing some of its proposed fuel saving measures at Londons's "BUSIEST" airport London Heathrow and London Gatwick...
Initially the plans will involve the Boeing B747-400 aircraft... The idea is that they will tow aircraft from their stands to a holding point close to the departure runway and engines will only be started up 10 minutes before take-off...
Now I understand saving fuel is the number one goal which Virgin Atlantic is aiming at here but wouldnt this have impact on movement at congested airports such LHR?

Not if they're at a holding stand.
And also, those tugs (some of them, anyway) can tow aircraft faster than they typically taxi, anyhow.
Hopefully, this works out for the best! I am for anything that lessens the impact flying has... so long as it's reasonable. And this should also be profitable! Can't beat that- more money AND environmental protection!

Although that one slogan, "More Expereince than our Name Suggests" always makes me laugh

Oh dear, go and compare some fuel flow figures and then come back with something constructive  talktothehand

I do recall that a 777 is more fuel efficent than a A346... ?
