Tue Jul 18, 2000 2:28 am

Hi, I'm flying OKC-ORD-LHR next thursday  . I am flying a BA 742 from ORD-LHR. Has anyone ever flown on this route or flown a BA 742? Your info would be appreciated.

Last summer I flew ORD-LHR on G-BDXK (Chelsea Rose tail, A/C year 1983) and back on G-BDXB (A/C year 1977, now flying for Nigeria Airways). Both flights were great and I enjoyed them very much. The aircraft, although showing their age, appered to be in very good shape and the service was excellent. But hey, I might be biased - 747 Classic + BA is my favorite combination!

I flew on a BA 747-200 earlier this year, and they are comfortable planes. The seating, 3-4-3, is comfortable enough. I'm always surprised how big these planes are. I usually fly coach, although sometimes I'm in Club, and you just keep walking, and walking, until you finally reach your seat. I like to sit aft Row 45, that way you're behind the wing, and not over it. Have a nice flight, and post a report when you return. Cheers!

On the ORD - LHR legs of my trip in May (on BA) I was on a 744 on the way over and a 742 on the way back. The 744 was nice. It had a better bathroom arrangement than the 742. On the particular 742 I was on they expected all the coach 'World Traveler' passengers to go all the way to the back of the plane and use the restrooms there. The 744 had bathrooms more spread out. If you're in the back anyway, you won't notice the problem. The 742 showed its age but was still ok.

Have a nice trip!

I flew on the 742 on BA last summer, its actually a great great plane, We took off in what felt like the role of a 767...it just seemed really short, and then we took off, and the gave a very smooth ride, and it handles turbulence very well. This year I will be flying on a 777...I like it alot too!

Try and sit in the upper deck of the 742. It's a lot quiter up there and the cockpit is a lot closer for when you visit it. Have fun!!

Hi. I too had the chance of flying the 747-200 twice. First in 19 June 1982 from LHR-JFK with G-BDXG and second in 2 August 1998 from LHR-BOS with G-BDXF. Both were great flights and I always enjoy a lot flying in RRoyce 747's! Unfortunetly you probably wont have the chance of flying in the upper-deck, I remember when I boocked my last flight to USA 7 months before and the upper-deck places were all already taken!!!
Have fun!

Last summer
LHR-YVR
MIA-LHR
On the MIA leg of the trip we got to sit upstairs, it is quieter up there, the service is better and you have less far to travel for the obligatory cockpit visit!
I think the 200's are noisier than 400's, despite BA using the RB211's. Still they are beautiful to behold, and the cockpit is spectacular.

Yep.

Flew BA's 742's Gatwick-Barbados return in 95. Probably the finest 742's in the sky.

As I've said, I flew round trip ORD-LHR on BA 742 last year, and to be honest I wasn't impressed. I much more preffered BA's EuroTraveler Coach in 757s and 767s (and really liked them), they had much more legroom, and more comfortable seats. BA B742s are to cramped in WorldTraveler coach.

No complaints about the in flight service (other that they don't have moving maps in old 742s); the crew has been friendly and helpful.

However, it was cold in the cabin both times; on the return leg, when I was sitting by the window, blanket was no good.

This doesn't mean I wouldn't choose BA again for any trip; just not on their 742s.

Well, good luck.

I haven't flown BA, but on the UAL 747-200, it was very nice and very good service with a good movie to watch. Man I love those 747's, they are like no plane on the face of the earth. You have to get a cockpit visit, the 747 has the most spectacular cockpit, the 744 is better than the 742 Cockpit, I think, but the 742 cockpit is the coolest I've ever been in, so far. (I haven't been on 744 yet)

The last i time i flew MIA-LHR and i sat on the upper deck, During the flight back i sat on the main deck. I can say that when you get the first row on the upper deck the upper deck is okay but the other seats upstairs are cramped. The main deck seats are much roomier.
The upper deck has two dedicated flight attendant for 16 people. Thats the best part. The service is very good!

For an overnight flight the main deck is better, for a daytime flight the upperdeck is better.

If you are no oneworld sapphire or emerald member you can forget the upper deck as they only give the seats to frequent flyers.
