The History Of MYR?

Fri Jan 12, 2007 8:02 am

Anyone know the history of Myrtle Beach International?

I was just in there the other day... it has some tell-tale signs of being an ex-WWII field, such as the random assortment of odd taxiways, but its also strangely lacking others, such as the multiple runway layout. It also has some tell-tale signs of being an ex-B-52 base, such as the one long runway and huge paved ramp, but also is strangely lacking others, such as the alert area and the runway length not being nearly as long as other bomber bases.

Just curious what it was in its former life. Was there the other day and looking at the airport diagram got me wondering.

Piedmont had scheduled flights into MYR by 1951-- during most or all of the 1950s scheduled flights were summer-only. In the 1955-56 airport directory it's Myrtle Beach Municipal, with two 5000-ft runways, then in the 1959 it's Municipal and AFB both, with a 9500-ft runway. Sometime after that the airlines moved to North Myrtle Beach; the 1965 Jepp says civil flights PPO, with only fuels available JP-4 and 115/145.

Far as I can see it was around 1975-6 that the airlines moved back.
