Shuttle By United A320s & A319s?

Thu Feb 25, 1999 1:39 pm

Since United Airlines likes the A320 family better then their 737s, will it soon by in the Shuttle By United fleet to be an addition with the 737s?

I dont know thats a good question. They might in the long future if they are planing to get rid of their older aircrafts. For now I have seen a couple of them that fly shuttle but not all. I might be mistaken thoug. It would be nice to see A320s shuttle for united.

UAL will probaby not start the Airbus a/c in Shuttle ops. until the 737's have been retired. The pilots receive 7/8 ths pay, as opposed to all other 737 pilots. The 737's have great dispatch reliability, and are modified and well suited for the short-shuttle hauls.

I agree, though, it would be great to have the Airbus on shuttle duty!!

I don't think United will put A320 family in its Shuttle at all. Remember that many airlines buy A320 for its small capacity but long range. 737s are made to fly short haul in the first place, which is what the Shuttle really needs.

I know that United is planning to put all its remaining 737-300' and 500's in the Shuttle system once it has enough of the A320 family to cover its non-Shuttle operations. I don't know if they have plans yet to replace the Shuttle 737's, but it seems like they will be around for a long while.

Most likely the A318 will be ordered, but the 717 is better suited for the shuttle routes. The 717 is cheaper on short routes with alot of climbing and descending due to the great wing design by MD. The A318 is more suited (Like the A320) for long thin routes. 717s would look good in UAL's livery.

CX747 LOOK good

Fri Feb 26, 1999 1:52 am

Yes I think it, meaning the 717, will look good in United Livary, but it wont be a very good aircraft for their fleet, due to the fact that they have no commonality with the rest of the fleet. For now I dont see no reason for united to order the A318, I think they don't need it. If they do, I think there going to buy the A318 to keep costs down, because of Commonality with the rest of the Airbus fleet.

Maybe it will but not in the near future because the 737-300's and 500's will still be around for a while. For as long as there are 737's at United, that's what the Shuttle by United fleet will consist of.
