Why Doesn't AA Fly JFK-MEX?

Tue Jul 18, 2000 2:42 am

With the Skyteam alliance now in place, DL and Aeromexico have a monopoly
on the JFK-Mexico City route as no other airline flies it. Any reason why AA is
not servicing this market? It would a logical destination given AA's presence in
Latin America and at JFK?

If they did fly it, they would probably use the 757.

Similarly puzzling, ContinentalEWR, is why AA doesn't fly JFK-YYZ...yet, they do fly LGA-YYZ. In addition, they don't have a codeshare partner that serves the JFK route. You'd think that they'd at least have American Eagle service on it, as JFK is a large AA hub.

That they don't is personally annoying to me, because I travel to Toronto a lot, and to fly there on AA, I'd have to either go through LGA or go out of my way through ORD. >

American is constantly growing at Kennedy, it would not surprise me if they started a service to the above mentioned cities. I always wondered why AA did not fly into the following from JFK: MEX, YYZ, MCO, FLL, BOG. It seems other airlines operate these flights with much sucess.
727, L1011, MD80, A300, 777-200, 737-300, 737-700, 747-400, 757-200, 737-800, A320. E190, E135, 767-200, CRJ9

American used to operate JFK to BOG, with a 767
200 but pulled the route. It does not make sense
for American NOT to fly to Mexico City from JFK,
as there is a lot of O&D traffic between the two
cities and American is a market leader in Latin
America. As for Canadian routes, they did have
some Eagle flights to Toronto and Ottawa, but
I guess not Montreal. Strange, since even
before the relaxed laws between the US and
Canada, American had a dominant position
North of the border. As for Orlando and FLL,
American probably wants to steer clear of
the hotly contested Florida market from JFK
other than Miami, which is a major AA hub
and connecting point for South America.
Delta Express, Delta, Jet Blue, TWA, all
offer cheap seats to Florida and American
probably doesn't want to get bruised. It
does operate FLL flights from LGA though.

While AM and DL fly 757s to MEX from JFK, CO flies 737-700s and MX A320s from EWR. These carriers combined might saturate the market.

I know routes to Mexico not too long ago were restricted, and I wonder if that is still the case. For example when UA bought Pan Am's Latin division in 1991, part of the agreement was that Delta would get the JFK-MEX route. So, that is the only route UA did not get. Delta wanted it bad because they could not fly it on their own. Also at the same time, UA battled with Alaska to win Pan Am's rights to fly LAX-MEX.

Was an open skies agreement ever signed with Mexico?
