"Sneaky" NWA DC-10 Flights!

Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:26 pm

Just spotted on Flight Explorer, a NWA DC-10 flying from VCV to Fort Benning on a military charter. About two weeks ago, I brought up the subject of NWA retaining DC-10's during the NFL playoffs. I forgot about the military charters though. So the question is, when will the "real" final NWA DC-10 flight occur. Is there a bona-fide timetable of when the airline will actually withdraw the a/c from final service???

I've heard the DC-10 called many things, but I've never heard it called "sneaky"  Wow!

As you may know NWA gets very attached to their planes, their not actually getting rid of them just like the DC-9's.

Great to see NW getting a little more life out of these DC-10s.

They always said Jan 8 was the last day of SCHEDULED service with the DC10.
Key word... scheduled.

They will stop flying DC-10s when one of two things happens. 1. They lose the last of thier DC-10 certified pilots. 2. They sell their last DC-10

So instead of the various sarcastic responses, I simply asked a question if anybody knew how long NWA was going to keep the DC-10's flying. Moronic responses are not necessary!

Very early Thursday morning, an NWA DC-10 left MSP to Ft. Benning. We asked the pilot what was up, and he replied that the aircraft was to be used for future military charters.

With over 21000 new troops heading to Baghdad i bet they will get some use here.  Smile They certainly won't run them all over in C-5's and C-117's... though some will.

Yes, it is those two aircraft which are to be delivered to TZ in March and April. They should be out of NW service in Feb/Mar.

The DC-10s won't ever die, they have more hours on them than nearly anything else flying and they are still going strong.

NW has them, might as well put them to use, as well as to sub in on holidays and what not to add capacity.

Never hurts.

They have all been sold except for perhaps one left, but it is stored in MZJ. The last two operating, N234NW and N237NW, have been sold to TZ. These will be out of NW operations in Feb/Mar and NW will be out of the DC10 business completely. They are selling everything, simulators, trainers, tooling, etc.

There's been a lot of activity between VCV-LSF, not just with NW DC-10s. At least 2 TZ B753s have been running back and forth the past few days as well.

Impressive. Thanks for the info. This is certainly a new leaf at NW, where they've clung tooth and nail to anything on its way out. Just think, another year or so, the DC-10s, 747-200s, and DC-9s will all be gone. Northwest will have a normal, boring, modern fleet.... what will talk about?

Wooooo....hold your horses. Year or so? Year or 5-10. The -10s gone, -200s not much longer (787s will enter fleet first and some 744s will be moved). DC-9s gone....I laugh at the idea. I hear there is this new fangled thing called the horse-less carriage. It will never catch on. I also hear of a thing called Y1 and a rumored E-190. Quiet comfortable single aisle planes. Ha! They will never come. Never I tell you! DC-9 is all they will ever need just like 256K.*

With NW holding contracts to do military charters, what will they use once the DC-10s are gone? 744s? They can't use the A330s as they are all going to be in regular use right? The 742s could be used but they are all in Asia and only a few are left.

When NWA retired the DC10-40s, they were flown to Greenwood, MS. to be scrapped by the Memphis group. Does anyone know if they have any going there, or have they all been sold or returned to the owners.

The -30s have been mostly flown to MZJ for onward sale although a few have been scrapped. Some where sold to Omni and flown to TUL. TZ has bought 9 and most of those are stored in MZJ for now with one in SAT for heavy maintenance.

There Alive! There Alive! I think some of the DC-10's seem to have more lives than a cat. ATA loves those old 3-holers (including L-1011's), and I am glad they do. I also like that these aircraft are doing the important job of transporting our Military forces.
Let these Mad Dogs continue for many years in ATA's good hands.

Yesterday afternoon there was an NWA DC-10 in AMS (old livery/didn't see reg). It was parked at gate E22 and it seemed it was taking passengers (to MSP or DTW).

Apparantly the DC-10s are not completely phased out yet?

Northwest Airlines added an extra flight from Amsterdam to Memphis, TN (MEM) to accommodate passengers from the two flight cancellations of trans-Atlantic flights from Amsterdam. Flight 9900 was operated by N234NW, since the aircraft had to be ferried back to the United States anyways. The flight departed AMS at 8:43am and arrived in MEM at 11:55am.

With NW holding contracts to do military charters, what will they use once the DC-10s are gone?

NW doesn't really hold contracts to do military charters. They register their aircraft in the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, which subjects them to callup by the Air Mobility Command in an emergency. The AMC rewards airlines that so register their aircraft with the right to a percentage of the overall international military charter pie. Most airlines, like NW, don't actually do that flying. Instead, they contribute their rights to a "team", and the team takes the right to do the flying, with the low-cost charter carriers (like ATA, World, Omni, North American) that specializes in such work actually doing the flying, then paying commissions back to the "team", which distributes those commissions back to the team members, like NW. So NW gets money but doesn't actually do much flying. When the low-cost carriers in the teams can't do the flying because of prior commitments, then any team member can take the flying, and sometimes airlines like NW will help out in a pinch (so they aren't *forced* by the military to do it -- better to do it voluntarily on occasion rather than be forced to do it on less desireable terms). That's for international flying. Domestic flying, which is a lot easier on the carriers because of much less significant crewing/overhead/logistics issues, goes by different rules, and it seems like that's what this DC10 is being used for on occasion. Southwest, by the way, is one of the major players in domestic military charter (at least it was as of the last public reporting of same). NW does in fact do some occasional flying on international military missions with a 742 or 744, and UA occasionally does some with a 744. However, if World, Omni, ATA and North American have a plane available for widebody international flying requirements, they have the right to do it before UA or NW (or CO or AA or DL) get called up; it's only if they don't have availability that you see the other guys doing international work -- and they don't really want to be doing it.

You can see who has registered what aircraft into the CRAF, both domestic and international, long range and short, cargo and pax, at http://www.dot.gov/ost/oet/craf/index.html These spreadsheets, rather disturbingly, usually have errors in them (like calling NAA's 752s 767-200s in the latest Enclosure 1 summary spreadsheet), but it gives you an idea what's in the fleet and registered for callup in a real emergency.

Quoting Beech19 (Reply 11):
With over 21000 new troops heading to Baghdad i bet they will get some use here. They certainly won't run them all over in C-5's and C-117's... though some will.

Very few deployments are handled on cargo aircraft like C-17s and C-5s, at least for the ride from CONUS to the outskirts of the operating theater, or from Europe to same. The military really doesn't have "organic" (i.e. in-house) passenger lift for the ride into the outskirts of the operating theater, and it doesn't make any sense for it to do so. So, the charter guys will deploy the troops to the Sandbox, and then once they mass on the outskirts of it, they'll then be taken into their actual operating locations on air or ground military vehicles.
