Horizon At STS, Will It Work?

Fri Jan 12, 2007 3:12 pm

Well, as far as I can tell, it is official...I see the billboards when I drive around Santa Rosa....Horizon in Santa Rosa, starting in March. Advertised prices...99 bucks to LAX and 149 to SEA(one way). LOL the airport fence is outside my driveway...will i hear those Dash-8s humming? Will it grow to include LAS, RNO and a few other cities...will other airlines jump on the wine country bandwagon...When Im getting my TO clearance for a GA flight, I hear countless IFR bizjets getting their readbacks to BUR, VNY or SNA

Cheers

I'm sure it will work just fine. It's not like STS has never had airline service before. I remember doing a couple of day and night flights for my PPL and instrument rating and seeing J31s, EMB120s and even a B1900 or two.
I think Santa Rosa would also see a big incline in there city finances as there are already a lot of travelers that commute from Santa Rosa and surrounding areas to SFO and OAK.
Airline service stopped just after 9/11 and now that the service is coming back to the smaller airports in california and even PMD, maybe aviation will return to what it used to be.

Hey Pilottj, who did you do your checkrides with up at STS? I went with Steve Benidict, one of the greatest DPEs I've flown with.

PILOTTJ - well if it does work, don't think RNO will ever be a flight option. First, why waste a Dash 8 on such a short segment and lose money, there's no way that route would ever make money, too short with no O&D and quicker to drive by a long shot. Now, LAS might seem feasible, but before anybody jumps that far, let's just make sure that STS and its local community are ready to support the service that Horizon is offering them. Like many small airports, STS and surroounding people have cried and cried for service over the past years since Ua Express departed, but, let's see if they can put it to the test and make it work. I hope it works because I remember timetables of the past when EMB120 or BAe146 jets flew nonstop legs to LAX, and J31 a/c would make the hop over to SFO. I am hoping they are smart enough as well to advertise to a wide and more broad catchment area and grab all those people just north of SFO. Free advertisement already if they use it right. Free parking, quicker security than SFO, comparable fares, I'd even say more comfortable a/c than the rj that might be flying other airlines' flights down to the LA basin or north to SEA, I really just hope that this works

I remember riding on the UAEX EMB-120s from SFO a few times...short and low hop but oh so beautiful views of the city at night. The difference in ticket price was sometimes cheaper or about the same as the airporter fare. Yeah I guess RNO might be a waste. Perhaps Portland or other LA area airports might work.

Bablackpilot - I haven't had a checkride from Steve, but I have met him. I usually do my flying over at North Coast Air. I love flying their Comanche...what a slick bird. I flew from here to Shelter Cove in 45 mins. That is a 5hr drive.

Cheers,

There was an airline in the late 1980's (I think) called Westates that flew Convair 580's between STS - LAX/RNO. Too bad that didn't last.

It should work fine...there is a lot of demand for flights betwen LAX and STS.
The flight times are perfect.

SEA might take some time to build up though

Weather and traffic permitting.

I80 to Sacramento can be a parking lot at rush hour and holiday weekends.
(And there is no real short-cut or way to bypass this...CA128 may look the part, but trust me, from my firsthand experience.....the freeway is better.

Then,
I80 beyond Sacramento has been known more than once to be closed due to weather. Its the luck of the draw.

Even with smooth-sailing, flying at 80mph+, it is at least 3 and a quarter hours.

I would not be quick to judge whether or not an STS-RNO is a bad-idea or not.

Allegiant had an interest in and discussions with STS in the past, about a year and a half ago.

I know the Santa Rosa Area well and there is no air service within miles. The closest would be the Bay Area Ariports of Oakland and SFO. With increasing traffic congestion, these airports are increasingly inconvienent and expensive to use-price of gas and the high parking fees plus time. Sacramento ariport is about a 2.5 hour drive. The Russian River and wine industry that is developing in the area attracts many turists and those on business travel.
