Which Carriers Have Ordered The Most 747s

Sat Jan 13, 2007 9:14 pm

Curious to know how this works out...
My guess for a top 5 is..

JL
BA
SQ
UA
LH

Does anybody have the data (broken down, into -100 -200 -300 -400 including scd / f / et al)?

I would have assumed that PA was the largest single customer of the 747....

KLM had all the 4 types up until now, and was first 200 customer....

they still have like 25 in the fleet right now, with a new 747-400ERF to be delivered (which will be ''leased'' out to AF for 1,5 years up until the new 777's arive)

Am I correct in assuming that our figures for LH include recently ordered B748i?

Some others to add to the list

Korean Air - 67
Qantas - 57
China Airlines - 48
PAN AM - 45
ANA - 45
Cathay Pacific - 45
THAI - 26
Air India - 19
Alitalia - 17

So it would seem the top 10 is as follows
1. Japan Airlines
2. British Airways
3. Singapore Airlines
4. Lufthansa
5. Korean Air
6. United Airlines
7. Qantas
8. China Airlines
9. = PAN AM / Cathay Pacific / ANA

Top 10:

JL: 108
BA: 94
SQ: 93
LH: 81
KE: 67
UA:64
QF: 57
KL: 51
CI: 48
NH/PA/CX (tied for 10th): 45

As BA are likely to order the 747-8 SuperJumbo, there is a good chance that, when 747 production ceases, they will have placed the most orders, even though JL, SQ, and LH are all likely to order the 747-8F.

True, but not as clear cut as you think, and I doubt if they do, it will be a huge buy. Currnetly they are signalling towards a mix of A380s and 747s, which will be fantastic for us enthusiasts Big grin Big grin

British Airways have the world's largest 747-400 fleet, with a total of 57 in service.

JAL, however, have a higher total number of 747s including the classic models.

Where does NW fall on this list (for combined pax and freighter models)? They'd have to be up there somewhere, no?

AF/KL is really high in the list if you combine them.

KL never had any 747-100s. Their first 747 was the first -200 built, PH-BUA, one of their original batch of 7 P&W-powered -200s, later sold and replaced with the final batch of GE-powered -200s which were later modified with the stretched upper deck and became -200SUDs, basically identical to the factory-built -300, of which KL had 3 in addition to the converted -200SUDs.

KL's first 747-200 in original and final livery. It later went to America West along with KL's 2nd and 3rd 747-200s (PH-BUB and BUC) for HP's brief and ill-advised venture into longhaul service to Hawaii and Japan. All 3 scrapped between 1994 and 1996.

Interesting. I had no idea that there was ever a 747-200 with only three windows per side on the upper deck (a la most of the 747-100s).

Quite a few early -200s had the 3-window upper deck originally. Boeing offered the 10-window option at a fairly early stage and most of the -100s/-200s with 3 windows were later modified to add the extra windows, as the original upper deck lounges were replaced with saleable seats on almost all 747 operators by the late 70s/early 80s.

A few other early -200s with 3 windows (all built in 1971):

The first four 747-200's in the AI fleet (deivered 1971-1974) had only 3 windows on either side on the UD...later, AI added more windows to make it 8 on the UD for these planes....

SWISSAIR operated the two Jumbos from Zurich to JFK, one nonstop and the other via Geneva to JFK. Then they ordered 5 743, I saw one land in geneva early one morning late August 1983. I was headed on BA via LHR to Miami, how I wish I now was on the SWISAIR 743 to JFK just to fly SWISSAIR, an airline I never got to fly. Saw those 5 743 at JFK and such places as HKG many times, SWISSAIR was at one point negociating with Boeing for new 744's but for one reason or another that sadly never happened.

Could have been HB-IGC or D. They were great to fly, even on the upper deck.

I am shocked at the UAL numbers. I had no idea they would be in a list with those carriers.

Nice to see they still operate the beautiful bird.

I didn't read the whole post, how many 47's for CO, and HP?

HP got four second-hand B742s from KL in 1989/90. They almost killed the airline.

Back in the 1960s, CO jumped in like most major US airlines to buy B747s. Continental ordered four B747-100 that they only kept for about 3 1/2 years each due to high fuel price. Then, in 1987 CO merged with PEOPLExpress and inherited PE second-hands fleet. Two B741s and seven B742s.

Cheers.

Almost. I don't remember the original TW order, but they ended up with the three SPs as well as 19 -100s. Among these -100s were the four originally ordered by Eastern Airlines but finally cancelled.

Thanks so much for the info. I had no idea they operated so few 747's(HP) and thought CO had a bunch more as well. I got to see a CO 747 parked in the desert years ago, was kind of cool. Thanks again.

Help me out here...I have a vague recollection of NW advertising on their timetables that they owned the most 747's of any airline. (the caveat being that most airlines lease their aircraft).

Anyone out there remember this? Is it still the case?
