Continental Express In 1996

Sun Jan 14, 2007 7:30 am

I flew on Continental Express between EWR and BWI in the mid 1990s. It was an ATR-42.

I'm wondering if that flight was operated by "Continental Express" as a separate airline, Britt Airways, or another airline entirely.

Does anyone know?

EWR, CLE and IAH were entirely Express operations in 1996.

The GSO hub was operating in 1996 as well. I know there were some Express ATR and E120 flights, but I think the majority of the "feeder" routes were operated by GP-Express on B1900's.

IIRC, at that time, all Continental Express flying was performed by Britt Airways. Britt was the surviving certificate in the merger of commuter/regional carriers owned by CO; those carriers were Britt, Bar Harbor and Rocky Mountain.

That company later changed names to become ExpressJet.

To answer your question, Britt was (d.b.a.) Continental Express, Continental Express was Britt and 100% owned by CO at that time.

So now, all of CO Ex's operations are served by ExpressJet, a fully owned subsidary of CO? Although now they are using Chataqua instead of ExpressJet?

ExpressJet is no longer a wholly owned subsidiary... I believe they're not a publicly traded company (or a holding company that owns them is). Continental is replacing roughly 1/4 of the flying that ExpressJet has been doing with a combination of Chautauqua and more Continental Connection (Prop) flights.

The flight in question would've been operated by a company called "Continental Express". Continental Express was formed in 1993 by combining several regional carriers, including rocky mountain, bar harbor, and britt. Continental Express retained the Britt Airways operating certificate.

Continental Express changed its name to Expressjet around 2002. Expressjet continues to use the Britt Airways operating certificate, ATC code BTA, and is transitioning to the IATA code XE (formerly RU). Expressjet retains the brand name "Continental Express" on most of its flights, but there is currently no company called "Continental Express".

Starting this year, republic airlines' chautauqua division also uses the brand name "Continental Express" for some of its flights.

Today, think of Continetal Express as a franchise.....various companies can do business under that name, but they are managed and staffed seperately and the product isn't exactly the same.

Hope this helps clear things up.
