Jan. 19, Nationwide Strike By Alitalia, Again!

Mon Jan 15, 2007 5:19 pm

Italy: Airline strike

Report date: 10 Jan 2007

Airline, workers have strikes planned in the coming weeks that could affect transportation throughout the country. Delays in air traffic could occur at the following times and places: Jan. 19, nationwide strike by Alitalia workers; Jan. 22, all day ground workers strike at Veronas airport; Jan. 30, air traffic controllers strike in Milan, noon to four, and day-long ground workers strike at Venices Marco Polo Airport.

Anyone within Alitalia who knows which flights will be affected, and how many?

For cryin out loud! In stead of getting to work to save their precious airline, they get it into more debt by a strike. Really, I know you can be mad at your boss, but killing the company won't do any good.

I hope Alitalia won't be part of the AF-KLM group, there's just to much going on with that airline and KLM already saw that when they allianced with them.

Cheers!  wave

Believe it or not but this is a dedicated chapter in the (printed) Alitalia timetable, it states exactly which flights will be cancelled during strikes and which not.
Domestic, allmost all, European, some, long-haul, almost none.

The best outcome would be liquidation. I hope no one buys or "invests" in AZ. But the outcome is not yet settled. Maybe they will find a benefactor. A fool and his money are soon parted.

It sounds a little harsh, but I agree, liquidation is the best outcome of this saga. Investing in Alitalia will mean investing in a bottomless pit. It's time to start over with people who know how to run an airline and with staff who want to make their company a success.

One of the great things about Italy is that some things never change. Strikes were an integral part of our lives when we lived there 20 years ago. The country hasn't collapsed yet. Neither has Alitalia...

Does Italy truly require a flag carrier at this point? Almost all of Alitalia's routes are served by other carriers, and even those that aren't are easily accessed by connections through CDG, ZRH, FRA, etc. As for domestic, I'm sure Air One and other carriers are able to fill the void?

No, of course not.

Yes, all european airlines are able to fly domestic italian routes, so there is no need for AZ.

Why is there still no news about which flights will be cancelled? Last time at least they did send us a list with cancelled flights 4 days before a strike. I'm being bombarded with Italian phonecalls, and don't know anything...!

We as travelagents ( business and leisure) should just boycot AZ for a year. I'm getting sooo tired of every month the same chaos and extra workload for us...

I read a rumour somewhere that Merdiana (IG), the third Italian airline after AZ and AP is also due to be disrupted by a strike of its staff on January the 19th.

Heck... with all these strikes, why don't they get a little bit more organised and have them incorporated in their timetables?!! Flights cancelled with such a frequency ought to be reflected in their timetables. Maybe the EC ought to do something about it soon.
