Mon Jan 15, 2007 7:03 pm

I don't know the answer either, but I will also ask how many of those planes could be flying at the same time ? I imagine that it can vary a lot, deppending on the date, hour, etc, but just to know an average number.

About 15750, my best guess.
I Believe read it not too long ago in a mag.
It was one of the last issues from Air int. or flight int., they even had the break down list for all airlines, msn numbers, type, etc... ;

No there most be many more!

In our database we have a lot of aircrafts, some are W/O, scrapped or stored - but most aircrafts are in service*.

A300: 376
A310: 200
A318: 35
A319: 915
A320: 1589
A321: 366
A330: 440
A340: 329
A380: 5
ARJ: 117
ATP: 31
ATR42: 318
ATR72: 307
B.142: 142
B717: 149
B727: 491
B737: 4416
B747: 936
B757: 1009
B767: 852
B777: 596
CRJ: 1284
DC-9: 292
DC-10: 198
DHC-8: 689
Do328: 150
ERJ: 964
E170: 153
E190: 60
F28: 67
F50: 188
F60: 4
F70: 46
F100: 221
J-41: 53
L1011: 33
MD-11: 174
MD-80: 954
MD-90: 106
S2000: 57
Tu204: 28

Total: 19'340

but we have have not all aircrafts in our list.

There are many other planes arround like all Antonov's, B1900, B707, BAC 1-11, HS748, J-31, BN-2, all, Casa's, C208, DHC-6, DHC-7, Do228, DC-8, E110, E120, F227, F27, all Ilyushin's, all Yakolev's, all Let's, S340, all Short's, all Tupolev's (ex. Tu204), and more...

I think it would be arround 30'000 planes!

* = also testflights...

Then there is the issue of planes cycling registration for all kinds of, usually illegal, purposes.

I had a screen saver which I downloaded from staralliance.com which simulated real-time aircraft movements across the star network. That alone looked like a xmas tree, I can't even begin to imagine what a mess the app would have been if it included all known flights.

According to the fleet database on my website (which is about a year out of date now  Sad ) there are:

Active Registrations - 38,571
Total Registrations - 144,607

That includes:
commercial aircraft,
business jets,
Military aircraft based on commercial aircraft

It does not include light aircraft, helicopters or military jets not derived from commercial aircraft.

Thank you very much. That's very interesting.

Almost 40k + military.

Certainly room for a few thousand VLJ's.  duck

Can someone tell me the numbers for helicopters?
I don't think we'll ever know how many of those military aircraft are in active service  Wink

I'd be interested in seeing a total commercial jet fleet broken down by country if anyone has those figures - I know the US has the biggest fleet (something like 1/4 of the total), but I wonder which countries follow.

Does the A380 count as 2?  duck

And the An-225 as 3?

The following is based on country of registration, and not operation. Accurate as of January 2006.

Country - Active (Total)
United States (N) - 17,798 (68,942)
Canada (C) - 1,677 (8,989)
China (B) - 1,307 (2,853)
Germany (D)- 1,036 (3,248)
Great Britain (G) - 1,017 (5,612)
Russia (RA) - 1,010 (3,362)
France (F) - 936 (3,971)
Iceland (TF) - 74 (549)
Russia (CCCP) - 4 (103)

Im not too sure about a few of those figures, particularly russia. Let me know what other countries you want to know the stats for.
