SAS increases traffic to US

In response to increased demand and a desire to offer its customers more flexible solutions, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will increase its traffic between Copenhagen and New York with an additional service from May 20th, 2007.

"We are keen to offer our customers greater flexibility and respond to the needs from the business and tourism sectors. There is growing demand on our routes to and from the US and, in particular, New York. The new service is an evening departure, which we know is very popular, especially among our business travelers," says Lars Sandahl, Chief Commercial Officer, Scandinavian Airlines International

From May 20th, 2007, another flight connection will be offered between Copenhagen and New York in addition to SAS already extensive traffic to the US. SAS will now increase its flights to New York periodically, with the addition of a convenient evening departure.

The new service will operate four times a week until August 31st, 2007, offering customers an evening departure from Newark at 23.25, with arrival in Copenhagen at 13.15 and departure from Copenhagen at 18.35, arriving at Newark at 21.05.
Future flights: CPH-BOS; CPH-SVG; CPH-PVG-HKG-MNL-DVO; CPH-CDG; CPH-NRT; CPH-MIA; CPH-PVG

Yep, four days a week.

Before 9-11 they had 2x daily all week with 763, too.

Anyone knows where they'll get the capacity from? AFAIK they're already severely constrained on capacity. Since it's an A340 rather than a 330 they use on their current daily EWR flight, I reckon they might be cutting back on BKK to get the capacity? After all it¨'s a slow destination for SK in the summer, whereas EWR is huge. I checked a month ago on fares CPHEWR in July, cheapest Y was DKK 8.000; 1070 Euros. Good business indeed.

Congrats to SAS on this anyway!

Didn't SK lease two 340 from AC? I've always thought that one of those are going to be used on the ARN-PEK route, so maybee the other is beeing used on CPH-EWR?

Didn't hear about the two AC 340s! You mean in addition to the 7 they got already? ARN-PEK is gonna be 3-4 times a week, and they're taking capacity from the CPH-PEK route.

If I got things right they leased two more 340 from AC now that they are changing their 340 fleet to 777's. So yes, 2 + 7 = 9. But I may have missunderstood.

hmm... Lars Sandahl, chief of SK intercon, has said that the ac for the extra EWR is supplied from moving around a bit with the other intercon routes.. got a source for the AC340 or anything..???

There was a thread about it here on A.net a while ago, but now when I look around it seems these aircrafts went to LX.

According to Amadeus, CPH-PEK is still 7 per week after the ARN-PEK starts in the end of March.

According to Amadeus no other routes are being cut in the summer schedule, which only can mean one more....more aircraft

Exactly. But what's up with the ARN-PEK schedule:

ARN-PEK 22:30-12:55+1 Mon, Wed, Thu, Sun
PEK-ARN 14:45-18:10 Tue, Thu, Sun, Mon

CPH-PEK and PEK-CPH are daily. So why does the Thu ARN-PEK flight stay in PEK for two days? Or does SK do their maintenance in PEK...?

It is curious, indeed. According to Amadeus, this airplane will be idle:

At ARN: From 18:10 on Tuesday until 22:30 on Wednesday.
At PEK: From 12:55 on Friday until 14:45 on Sunday.

Just a curiosity, why doesnt SAS operate from JFK? I know TAP is another Euro carrier that operates from EWR only, but its understanable given the huge Portugese population around Newark.

IIRC, SAS moved from JFK to EWR in 1990 because they entered into a close partnership with CO. They wanted better access to connecting CO flights from EWR.

Can this really be financially possible in the airline industry of today? To have an AC sitting idle 1+ days..it sounds very inproductive.

SAS will reduce to 6x weekly on Copenhagen-Peking, and therefore will the plane be sent used on a flight back to CPH when arriving from ARN and therefore will not be siting idle in Bejing

Strange... but cool..! But why the response from Lars Sandahl then? Could Amadeus not be updated yet or? No change on BKK? They've done that previously in summer..(??)

As far as I can see in the schedule CPH-BKK is operating 5x weekly during summer. No real change there as this is the frequency at the moment also.

RE: SAS Increases On CPH-EWR

Wed Jan 17, 2007 7:40 am

I just ran a quick check on Amadeus for June and found out that SAS plans to do the following long haul flights:

A333:
Daily CPH-EWR
Daily CPH-IAD
Daily ARN-EWR
Daily ARN-ORD

Which means that all four A333s in their current fleet will be busy with this schedule.

A343:
Dx1 CPH-BKK
1345 CPH-EWR
Daily CPH-NRT
Daily CPH-ORD
Daily CPH-PEK
Dx3 CPH-PVG
Daily CPH-SEA
1347 ARN-PEK

SAS will need nine A343s to be able to operate this schedule on certain days, e.g. on the night between Thursday-Friday, when the following nine flights will be in the air:
1 BKK-CPH
2 CPH-BKK
3 EWR-CPH
4 CPH-NRT
5 ORD-CPH
6 CPH-PEK
7 CPH-PVG
8 SEA-CPH
9 ARN-PEK

So what's going on? Is SAS getting two new A343s? In that case, from where? Or is the schedule on Amadeus wrong? In that case, what flights will be cancelled?

I think Amadeus is wrong, because SAS has not yet desided where the planes are taken from, I have seen that before. Well Amadeus is showing what is correct from the information they got from the airliners. So no one is in fact wrong.

Now I rember where I saw that SK is leasing two 340's from AC. There was an article at aftonbladet.se (big Swedish newspaper) where the CEO of SAS Intercontinental said this. It was at the same time as ARN-PEK was announced. He also said that SK wants to operate to HKG (not if op from CPH or ARN) BKK (from ARN) and a possible code-share with NH to NRT (also from ARN)  Smile
