Quotes:
The government on Monday said it was merging state-run carriers Indian Airlines Ltd. and Air India Ltd. by the end of March as part of a wider strategy to take on nimble private players. "Everybody feels the process of merger is appropriate," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told reporters. "The merger process will be completed by March 31."

He added there would be no loss of jobs or salary cuts after the merger. "The two airlines would gain 5 billion rupees ($113 million) annually after the merger," Patel said, adding the cost of the merger would be about 1.5 billion rupees to 2 billion.

The government plans to make the new merged entity among the world's top 20 carriers.

I expect them to merge it with Air India Express so as to compete against LCCs, both domestic and international. AIX will be retained as a fully owned subsidiary by the merged entity.(As per other news accounts)

What i have heard based on information collected from sources is that Alliance Air will be the low cost arm of the merged entity on the domestic market with a fleet of A319s ad maybe the odd RJ amd AIX will be the low cost arm of the merged entity on the International Front with its fleet of 737-800s.

I would hope that all these would retain the AI brand for the merged entity. It is certainly more recognized the world over than IC.

I hope they retain the Air India name as well.
regarding livery, I am a big fan of the current AI livery, but I also quite like the new Indian livery. I think its great. I can only hope that they retain one of the current two liveries instead of going for a completely new identity &/or livery.

I agree that "Air India" should be the brand... although the new IC livery looks far more modern than the current "Indian" one!

In India, it ain't over till it's over  Smile

After Left protest, Govt delays decision on AI-Indian merger

Quote:
...
The Group of Ministers (GoM) examining the proposal to merge state-owned airlines Air India and Indian failed to take a call today and asked Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel to address the concerns of employees’ unions first.

With CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury conveying to the GoM, hours before it met, the need to consider concerns raised by the unions of the two carriers, a decision, widely expected to be taken today, could not be reached.

Wouldn't they also consider retaining both the brands AI/IC separately with the managements/sales staff being merged.

Cheers

I notice that the article refers to 'the end of March' but nowhere in the article does it specify March 2007  Big grin

Given that both IC and AI now have new liveries, me thinks that the plan is to run the entity more like KLM-AF with both retaining their separate identities and serving complementary markets. The LCCs would also probably operate in the same way.

But then this is only me thinking, GoI works in mysterious ways, maybe we will now see a whole new rebranding exercise begin once half the existing fleets have been re-painted???

The only thing that surprises me about this news, is that the merged AI/IC could be amongst the world's top 10 if they wanted to be!

Wow! Seems to be heading for a pretty complicated structure....will we have three divisions, one for int'l, one for LCC domestic and one for LCC int'l....? Could actually turn out to be a good strategy if managed properly.....
