Vought/Alenia: 787 Update Sheet

Tue Jan 16, 2007 4:08 am

I was searching around on the Vought website and found this interesting page.

http://www.vought.com/newsFactGallery/SC_news/SC_update.htm

Some highlights:
Image of Section 47 (pre-production).
Updates on a weekly basis.
Vought has received notification that the autoclave they have for the 787 is the largest in the world by volume.

Hopefully we will see images of the tail (Section 47+48 combined) and also the central fues(Sections 43, 44, 45, 46) soon.  Smile

Can't wait to start putting it together!

I think that picture is mirrored because no cargo door is on the port side of the airplane. Well, not unless Boeing is planning on changing that. Wow, that piece looks smooth and clean. It has to reduce parasite drag by a tremendous amount. I can't wait for those birds to fly and for me to change from Airbus to Boeing guy.

Thanks Beech19, great find.

Looks like they put a post-processed section (windows and doors cut out, primer put on etc.) back to the mandrel for demo-purposes.

Looking at the picture it seems to me that the position of stringers is discernible from the outside, where kind of longitudinal 'sink marks' are visible or the surface became faceted somhow while curing. I noted the same when watching a primered, yet unpainted CFRP rear fuselage of an A380. IIRC it's referred to as 'Zeppelin-Skin' at Airbus.

Watching pictures of painted 787 pre-production sections, I saw nothing like that. Are the 'sink-marks' filled or facets smoothed before painting or will the surface be left 'as-is'? The pre-prod samples looked shiny like a mirror...

Actually there are and that looks like a bulk cargo door...or are you saying the 787 is not supposed to have one?

Yeah... the peices i have seen up close and personal are very smooth, shiny and show no "zeplin skin". I don't know if they are smoothed afterword or if this one (since it is pre-production and i know they tweaked the process a little) is a pre-tweak version. Very nice either way.  Smile

There is one "stringer indent" on this peice that I think that is just a mark on the peice because there is no stringer that runs across the door/window area on the fues barrel we have (KHI Section 43) to work on.

That design looks like you could stack them like cups or chairs.

Looks like it's made by a dirty roller or a roller made of a black rubber material. Something involved in moving the piece around?

I had that same thought! Just stack a bunch and then load them all in the LCF at the same time. lol

That was my assumption...

I guess the faint 'streak' running across the window cutouts is a mark left by the OML caul plates.

I know its a bulk cargo door. I just thought it should have been on the other side. I stand corrected. Everything is fine.

No. Vought built a brand new factory at CHS to build the Section 47 and 48. Next to that build the Vought/Alenia co-op built another facility that is integrators. They will attach and finish the Section 47/48 tail and also the 43/44/45/46 central fuesalage.

I thought that pics of the mandrels are verboten! No one has gotten picture of a 787 mandrel in public until now and I have thought it was because of propreitary trade secrets information.

Boeing doesn't want to show its hand in how they produce the fuselage barrels.

Did someone at Vought screw up?

Am I right or wrong?

Boeing has video of the process on their website.

It is a trade secret but its also patented, you can only do so much without getting into some deep DOO-DOO at this point.  Smile
