Wizz Air Opens New Base In Bucharest-free Tickets

Tue Jan 16, 2007 7:09 am

Wizz Air
is starting today 5 new routes out of Bucharest Baneasa BBU, Romania:
- Barcelona
- Budapest
- Dortmund
- London Luton
- Rome Ciampino

Also Barcelona and Rome Ciampino out of Tirgu Mures (TGM-central Romania)

On the other hand Wizz Air is dropping its previously announced Milan to Arad service before even starting the route. That's really weird . . .

Would love to see Wizz in DUB.
I know they serve Poland from ORK, but they could have opened up a DUB to Bucharest run as nobody does it at the moment.
Tarom tried a twice weekly 735 service on the route a few years ago but it was really short lived.
Romania is one of the few ex-Eastern bloc countries without a direct air service from Ireland.
Haven't we been here before ?

That's right, although my bet for this route is definitely on RyanAir. Look for them to make an announcement this coming spring with flights to Bucharest Baneasa. RyanAir's reps were in Bucharest inspecting BBU's existing facilities and chatting friendly with Tarom (Ryan's historical good father  old   airplane  Wink No doubt Dublin to Bucharest should be at the top of Ryan's list. Is been rumored that Bucharest Baneasa will be closed for a couple of months for runway resurfacing and terminal expansion and I assume that's one of the reasons why RyanAir and Easyjet are holding back for now.

One tends to forget the relationship Ryanair has had with Romania in the past. How quickly we can forget the RomBac 1-11's with Romanian crews.
Heck I even flew in them a few times. Actually, I flew to Stansted from DUB on a Ryanair RomBac in....ready for this ? - Business Class !!
Amazing to think they actually once had Business Class on FR.
It was an early morning midweek service which included champagne, cooked breakfast and newspapers.
Before M'OL took charge, of course.
Haven't we been here before ?

It isn't really weird, and it happens more often with the LCCs. Routes like Milan to Arad are a completely new market, with no or hardly any reference about passenger flows. Launching routes like these are big question marks for the airlines.

Here, putting a route on sale through the website gives a indication about the demand on the route. Will bookings come in quickly, the route should be operated or even already increased from the start. If nobody expresses interest by booking flights even at a few pence; better not start it. Or maybe try again after a couple of years.

Yeah memories, memories, I flew one of Tarom' s BAC One-Eleven once and for what I recall now I was impressed by its climbing rate on takeoff. Anyhow by many one of the best RJ ever built, too bad its assembling was discontinued. I think that only nine aircraft out of the eighty planned were rolled out of Romaero Bucharest-Baneasa hangars as ROMBAC 1-11 in late 80's - mostly operated by Tarom and . . . Ryanair!!!

Generally speaking you maybe right Joost, but in this case I would hardly call Arad a "completely new market" considering that just 45 kilometers away Timisoara-TSR is served by full-fare scheduled airlines like Alitalia - 3 daily (ER4) flights into Milan Malpensa, Carpatair six weekly (Saab 2000) into Milan Orio al Serio -- BGY. For that reason let me just doubt WizzAir's sincerity this time. It's just hard for me to believe that folks in that region would turn down Wizz's 1 Euro fares to Milan in favor of Alitalia and Carpatair full-fare.

Having recently been to Timisoara i think it will make a great Ryanair destination. Its only a couple of hours to Belgrade in Serbia and is also a wonderful city in a region with a faily large concentration of nice towns. Certainly Romania will provide a nice market once the relationship with the rest of the EU becomes more 'clear'. The fact that Romanians and Bulgarians have being prevented from working in the rest of the EU (although i have no idea about the "new 10") there is quite a large scope for ryanair style tourism. Open a route to Constansa and low-and-behold tourists will go there...hopefully..

Absolutely. No argument there.
Ireland has a good size ex-pat Romanian population (not nearly as large as the Polish or Latvian ones, but sizeable enough).
Whether this population base could now transfer into scheduled flights is another matter.
I'm sure as Connector4you said,

FR could probably make such a service work. They've opened flights to more obscure points than Bucharest with success.

 checkmark

There was a large inflow of Romanians in the late 90s to Ireland, and with a an estimated further 10,000 Romanians expected to come here since they joined the EU (regardless of the work permit requirement) I'm sure a scheduled flight could be sustained.

Carpatair were due to launch a Dublin-Timisoara route once they took delivery of their F100s, and after they launched routes to Frankfurt and London. However, with one of their F100s now gone on lease to Portugalia, I'm not sure if this is their plan anymore.

I remember Carpatair being mentioned alright. They seemed to go the way of the POLET flights to DME, which were all set to happen last year as well.

At the time RyanAir's reps were visiting Bucharest, Romanian press said that the Irish low-cost showed interest on operating routes out of Bucharest and Timisoara (Romanian Government controlled airports). It was also reported that FR wasn't shying away on trying to cut a "preferential deal" on its airport fees. Didn't work apparently. . .

Unfortunately Bucharest Baneasa is already overcrowded with low-cost operators like BlueAir, MyAir, SkyEurope, WizzAir, with German Wings and Air Berlin to start service soon. Terminal facilities, runway/taxi-ways are way behind where they should be at this time and the airport is currently in negotiations with Romaero to lease out one of their hangars and quickly convert it onto additional passenger terminal. Judging by the number of airlines currently seeking to operate at Bucharest Baneasa, the situation on the ground is really ...desperate. Not much of a brighter situation in Timisoara where passenger-terminal space continue to be insufficient even for existent scheduled-airlines. Prime-time slots on both airports are clearly in short supply.

But hey, the good news is that Romania still has 13 other airports to be explored by Ryan and Easy. All of them are controlled by local counties authorities and "deals" are welcomed  bigthumbsup  yes

With the "new EU 10" I only know of Hungary stopping workers from Romania not sure aboat Bulgaria. From the "the old" EU countries I know GB stopped workers from Romania and probably Bulgaria too. Sweden are open for all workers in the EU what about Ireland and the rest of the "old EU" and Norway, Iceland and Switzerland?

Romanians and Bulgarians, unlike the previous 10 accession states, will require work permits to work in Ireland.
