First Routes For ACs 777S - YUL-YZ, Maybe

Tue Jan 16, 2007 1:06 pm

I noticed a couple of pics of ACs 345s in YUL - enroute to/from YYZ shortly after these aircraft came on stream. I assume this was to help the crews get accustomed to the new birds.

I am wondering if AC may do the same with the 777s when they receive them in March/April, if they do would these planes show in the schedules? I would love to try and book on one of the first flights of these new planes. What ae the chances this may happen?

Also, would AC pilots already be training on the 777s - I am wondering how long they need to train before they are certified?

I'm guessing that it's probably what will happen for a short while, although If I remember correctly, when the 345 were used on YUL-YYZ, they were not loaded into the schedule but came more last minute, subbing for other A/C. AC staff on this board will probably have the best info. I'm hoping If it's cheap enough to get a ride on one. Otherwise, I might make it on purpose to book a trip via YYZ to Europe just to get on one this spring...  Wink

Guess we'll never know until Feb or March's schedule update by Air Canada.

Still haven't see any 777 on the domestic runs before inauguration on YYZ-LHR on 02APR07.

Yes, I ran through all the route schedules that the plane is expected to debut on and the earliest I found was April 2 YYZ-LHR, so I guessed they would probably receive the beast a couple of weeks before and wun it locally till the kinks are worked out...

Rumour has it April 1st will be AC's inaugural day for the 77W into sked service and that a YUL-YYZ run will be the inaugural flight.

I recall an article on AC's 777 plans a few months ago mentioning that the first one would be used on some domestic flights, specifically YUL-YYZ, for a while to expedite crew training. Many carriers adding a new type do this for similar reasons.

When Canadian Airlines (CP) took delivery of their first 747-400 in 1990 (photos of that aircraft below in all its liveries to date), before they put it into service on the routes it was intended for (YVR-NRT and YVR-HKG) they operated it for about 10 days on a YVR-YYZ-YYC-YVR routing. I worked for CP in YYC then (had just been transferred from YVR) and flew on the 744 on the one hour YYC-YVR leg one night just for the ride (back the same night on a 763). However, landing at the old Kai Tak airport in HKG was more entertaining. Still clearly remember my first landing there on a CP (then CP Air) DC-8-63 about 1971 after a YVR-ANC-HND-HKG flight (ANC a frequent westbound fuel stop in those days when winds were strong).

CP's first (of four) 744:

Chances are the crews will be flying YYZ-YVR and vice versa just as they did with the A345 way back when. Surely they will do the YUL run as well, but that a REALLY short (45-50min) flight.
