WN Thru-Plane Scheds: Change Often?

Wed Jan 17, 2007 9:52 am

Here's a question for OPNLguy or anyone else who's familiar with WN operations. My mom, who's 85, lives in the BWI area and would like to visit us in the RNO area, but with a bad hip, she doesn't want to make a connection. No one has a non-stop between RNO and BWI. I notice that for quite some time WN has had a one-stop direct flight between BWI and RNO (#1039 to RNO and #1812 to BWI). I know that with other airlines, the upline destinations change frequently, almost at the drop of a hat. But does WN keep the same routings for a longer period of time? And is it true same-plane service? I know that I have flown on other airlines that appear to show a through-plane routing with the same flight number, but in fact there is a change of planes at a connecting hub.

Any help would be appreciated so that I can get Mom out to Reno for a visit!

Thanks.

WN seems to change routing frequently. A couple of years ago there were great one-stop flights from Tucson to Sacramento. My favorite was the late afternoon flight that stopped in Las Vegas. Now there is only a 3:00 one-stop from Sacramento to Tucson. From my experience WN uses the same number for through plane service. Also, when you are purchasing the ticket the schedule will appear without intermediary cities only origin and destination.

If you see a stop number but NO City next of it, it means simply no change of planes.

So Flight 1039, your mother will NOT be required to change planes. The routing will be BWI-LAS-RNO and it is on a Boeing 737-700. Though if she finds out she is landing in LAS she MAY be tempted to get off  Wink No I kid. Silly

Flight 1812 coming home is routed RNO-LAS-BWI as well, also on a 737-700 no change of plane is required.

So you may book with knowledge she won't have to change.

However my only concern and this HAS happened, is the arcft may have a breakdown, WX or MX issues requires that plane to be pulled out of service, and those flying through will have to get off that plane and re board at the gate or another one to continue on their destination. This rarely happens, but has happened before.

Normally, scheduled thru flights do stay that way for awhile, but an aberration this year is the ongoing schedule tweaking in progress to maximize flights in/out of DAL, and that could affect thru flights elsewhere.

I picked a random day in the future (March 16), and there must have been a schedule change, since all I'm seeing BWI-RNO are connections. On the return, I see one flight (175) that makes 2 stops, and another (1241) that only makes 1, and everything else is a connection, usually in MDW or LAS, or even OAK.

Even if a flight is supposed to be a thru flight (no change of planes), there's no absolute guarantee that it'll happen that way. Aircraft get re-routed for various MX and operational reasons, and rather than risk having that sprung on your Mom at the last-minute, I have another suggestion.

My Mom is about the same age, and if it were me, I'd try to get her BWI-OAK and then a leisurely connection to OAK-RNO. Compared with LAS or MDW, OAK is a less-hectic connect, and a "known" connection before departure. Once you get on BWI-OAK, you no longer have to be concerned about a possible aircraft swap at LAS or MDW, since you're avoiding those places. The longer transcon flight allows more contiguous snooze time, and the hop back and forth between OAK and RNO is only 30-35 minutes in the air.

Once you get some dates narrowed down, PM me and I'll see what I can find out..

I think the BWI-LAS-RNO flight would be a good flight, because there are 13 non stop daily flights daily from LAS-RNO, so I am sure she wouldn't be stuck too long in LAS in a worse case scenario. WN gates are all clustered pretty close at WN so I think she would be OK. The RNO-LAS flight is about 80 minutes.

The spring schedule starts on March 11th, so that one-stop BWI-RNO that is now operating may be going away. I would just route her with the connection, but choose one that has a longer ground time...an hour maybe, and request a wheelchair for her so that she'll have assistance with the connection. Another idea...fly with her to MDW and put her on the MDW-RNO nonstop yourself, and make a nice day trip out of it.

Great advice from everyone... thanks! Another option would be to pick her up at OAK and drive her back to Reno... a pretty drive over Donner Pass (as long as it's not snowing!)
