Finally we have final figures for total traffic handled through Mexican airports network.

Airport (PAX in '000)

It does not include major aiports as TLC and PBC due to ASA reluctance to publish figures. However, I estimate TLC to have handled 1.1M pax and PBC 0.5M pax

Highlights:

1. MEX could not reach 25M pax mark with a meagre 2.5% growth
2. CUN could not reach 10M pax mark despite a recovery from late 2005 hurrican effects.
3. GDL notorious growth (12.3%) surpassed other touristic airports such as PVR and SJD, proving the domestic market strength.
4. Despite 6A reduction of services, MTY finally reached 5M pax mark, and we can expect this number to top 6M pax with newcomer VivaAerobus.
5. VSA increased a whopping 24% and is now the 9th non-touristic largest airport.
6. CZM decreased 24% and OAX 12% due to civil unrest in the latter.
7. Domestic traffic is still the main reason of operations in Mexico's largest airports. All but CUN, PVR and SJD handle over 70% of their total traffic through domestic operations.
8. Despite JR being grounded for some months, LAP did not collpased and still managed to have a 2.4% increase.
9. Obviously, TLC and PBC will see geometrical increases in 2006. I am still waiting for actual figures.

Interesting that Morelia (MLM) isn't listed there - that seems to be an expanding airport that IIRC has service to LAX, SFO, SJC, and ORD.

24 million passengers through MEX - 2 million per month - an average of +/-66,000 per day. Impressive numbers for such a crowded and hemmed in airport.

Indeed. MLM only saw 599,000 pax through its gates during 2006. In fact, its lost almost 70,000 pax during last year. VER, CJS, ZIH and CUU had heavier traffic. Though MLM has flights to LAX, SFO, SJC, ORD and IAH, it sees few domestic flights (only a few flights to MEX, MTY and TIJ).
As stated before, it seems domestic flights are still the main driver of most non-touristic cities in Mexico, hence MLM low ranking.

Thanx for the good information. Its promising to see GDL, MTY and TLC handling more traffic. Up to now, everything revolved around MEX.

For 2007, Cancun will be back to 100%, I hope to see CUN to handle around 12 million passengers. Cozumel is recovering, altough at a much slower pace than CUN, hopefully they too show a modest increase. Also, If you get those TLC figures, please let us know, I'm curious to see how far up the chain the LCCs are taking TLC.

I just saw your post. Impressive growth at TLC, its quickly becoming an important player in Mexico. Also, (unrelated to airlines), as far as corporate jet operations go, Toluca is one of the busiest airports in the world.

I'm surprised that two of the airports - HMO and CUL - are not served by CO. They must be too far away from Houston.

I'd say any airport in Mexico that already handles a 737 or A320 is ready to be served by CO.

Hey Peter! I'm sorry to make this Q... as I hate when people do it to myself.. but what's your source? I was/still patiently waiting for the DGAC to disclose every single detail with our airline during 2006.

Interjet and Volaris both have claimed to have flown over 1M pax in their 1st year of operation, more over, I always LMAO when they claimed as if they have both flown 1M pax OUT from TLC only, instead of saying it's been achieved throughout all its system.

Wow and just wow!! AFAIK, TLC was about to report 1.6-1.8M this year, but if they reached 2.64, that's just PRETTY IMPRESSIVE!!!

AFAIK, forecast was for 3M in 2007!!! But again, if they reach those 5 to 6M, which could be... with Avolar finally landing at TLC in February... I heard by 2015, TLC could be handling 10M but if they do it before, its going to be great for our airlines.

Once CUN gets its 2nd runway and new T3 opens, which all that, will be taking effect this year, we could see CUN ending 2008 with 15M pax!!!

IMHO, lots of good things around these days in the Mexican aviation industry!!! Something else to consider... fuel prices are dropping!!!!

Not bad.

Even with TLC's impressive growth, and near by, I'm guessing MEX could hit the 30 million mark by the end of 2008. Anybody agree/disagree??

Regarding info about TLC handling 2.6M pax in 2006, I know it was given by its managing director, but I do not know what to think. ASA (who manages TLC and 21 other aiports) states in its website that its whole network had 2.8M pax in 2006. Using the data offered by TLC managing director, would mean that PBC, QTO, CVJ, CLQ, NOG, XAL, CPE, PZA, TPQ and many others receive less than 140K pax. I suspect PBC alone see much more than those 140k pax...

TLC recent growth is obvious: from nil pax a year to become a hub of two airlines. We will see notorious increase in traffic there, even reaching 6M pax in two more years. But that's it... From there, it will register a normal growth rate.

I am not saying TLC will not become one of the largest airports in Mexico (in fact, it already is), but that its current growth will not be sustainable for 3 years, and other airports will not stop growing.

I would like this to happen, especially with the new terminal. However, hitting the 30M mark means growing at close to 10% in the next two years, and AICM has seen a shrink in growth: from 6% in 2002-2003 to current 2,4% due to lost domestic services to TLC and inability to capture new international traffic (which might become easiear with new terminal).

I have always thought the same, esp HMO. Now, with its strategy to link Mexican cities with LAX, I see lots of potential for both HMO and CUL to receive CO.

More info about TLC:

Since July, TLC is managed by Administradora Mexiquense del Aeropuerto Internacional de Toluca (AMAIT). Until then, when it was still part of ASA network, it had 568K pax (Jan-Jun 2006).

The biggest of the remaining airports operated by ASA is TGZ which was used by 414K pax from January until September 2006. Still waiting for final numbers.

MTY still in diapers for expansion.....

They are still looking to where to put the new terminal, despite Terminal C being used only by Viva, but that´s not enough, as more airlines are adding frecuencies and there is no room to grow, also just heard that instead of taking advantage of RWY 16/34, now they want to build a new one paralell to 11/29, but that will take a few years.

Hey Fyano, thanks so much for your advice, in fact I remember that the travel agent booked 23A, what a coincidence!
By the way, do you know if the ex-Varig 777 is doing MEX-MAD?
I would like to fly in any of the two newer 777s, not in the ex-Varig one, lol.
Is there any difference between the two ILFC 777s and the ex PP-VRA?
