Ryan Air Gives Free Flights By Mistake!

Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:48 pm

According to Irelands Today FM radio station RyanAir made a major error on their website last week and lots of people booked flights for free. The taxes and the air fare were set at €0.00!! The only thing you had to pay for was web check in and the credit card fee which on average came to €11. People have already travelled and were allowed to travel and also people are due to travel over the next few weeks and Ryan Air are honouring the ''Free'' tickets.
The offer was supposed to be a buy one get one free and after you booked your normal ticket you would enter in you booking ref: and be able to book a totally free ticket incl taxes. People were able to enter old booking references and dummy references and it allowed them to book .

With any other airline I would agree that this was a definite mistake; with FR however who knows.

Always remember that their boss always knows the value of publicity. he's probably counting the extra number of hits registered on their website due to this as I write.

This was reported by press in Poland and Ryanair director for Poland said all tickets booked that way will be honoured.

It's not a mistake, it's a viral marketing campagin.

Irish Times:

A Ryanair spokesperson said that the airline would not be commenting on the story other than to say the promotion has been "hugely successful".

She did, however, confirm that any bookings made through the Ryanair site would be honoured.

Can't remember whether it was on a.net, or another site that explained exactly how you could get the free flights - simple as enterering an unvalidated authorisation code...

It was on here, although the post was soon deleted by moderators. I think if they are allowing people to travel on these reservations it is because they have no record of what reference number was used to make the reservation.

Irish Times (again):

Ryanair is running a promotion whereby customers who book a flight for travel in early February can book a second flight for free. The e-mail provides a specific address on the Ryanair website (www.ryanair.com/member/freeflights.html), which is the one provided to customers of the two-for-one offer.

This page prompts users to enter the six-digit code they received when booking their first flight, but it now transpires any six digits can be entered.

As a result, recipients of the e-mail have been able to avail of the free flight without having booked a first full-price flight.

I got 3 flights to Dublin for 6p - £4.26 after the charge for using my card!!

It'll cost me more to drive to the airport and park than the cost of the three return flights - including the card charge!!!

Don't you just love Ryanair!!

Last week I booked 'normally' a Ryanair flight (for 0,01 EUR each way + taxes), then I made use of the promotion to book a free return flight (no taxes to pay, only credit card fee). Although I was aware (thanks A.net) of the bug that allowed any authorization code, I used the valid code I had obtained from my first booking.

Honestly, I thought FR would cancel the bookings made with fake codes.

I saw this on Ryanair's website and didnt believe it.

Polish flights were not offered in the deal though ! So no wonder polish flights are being honoured. The free flights were all the usual Tuesday/Wednesday in January only flights to the next door neighbours.

There was no fly to blackpool on the cheap and get to Morocco for the weekend deals.

[Edited 2007-01-18 21:07:24]
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

Yeah, I was the one that started the original thread last week but the moderators deleted it for "Aiding & abetting fraud."!!

Now we see that it was a sly PR stunt!

It must be a large bill though that FR will have to foot. All those taxes have to be paid!! (Mind you, I'd say they'll be able to manage paying it!!)

The offer is still working on the website - and now we know that it is all above board, what's stopping us!! Big grin

I was wondering where that thread disappeared to!

Let me extend my thanks to you again for helping me become a better fraudster! I'm off to SNN next week for a grand total of £1.42 and can rest at east that FR won't try and sting me for what I have them defrauded them out of.

Which is interesting, because people doing it that way were not innocently getting free tickets, but actively trying to screw over Ryanair. My guess is that once it was discovered, the airline said they had two choices: cancel the tickets because the customers were crooks; or honor the tickets as a good PR stunt and make all the crooks feel like they got away with something (and want to fly Ryanair in the future). The second option seems to be the more savvy one.

This must have been intentional, I checked the source code of that side and there is no code that would even look like they would check anything.

Overall, I think they are going with it because they can cut whatever advertising budget they have.

Though, sad to say in this day an age, someone will fly for next to nothing on a deal they possibly should not have gotten and then complain about something  Smile

"I flew around Europe for 5 euros and all i got was lousy service......"

Smile. Hey, for these extra cheap tickets, it is good publicity all the way for them, honor the tickets and the passangers are likely to chose you again as they feel obliged to do another trip at a normal price.

The check would have happened serverside, so you wouldn't see it by viewing the HTML source!

Let's compare what Ryanair and easyJet charge to use a card for payment - the only way you can pay online.

If you pay by Visa Electron, you don't pay a card fee. The same with easyJet.

If you pay by Switch, the amount you pay varies. For example, if your tickets come to 95.87 GBP, you'll pay 1.40 GBP. If, however, your tickets come to about 48 GBP, you'll pay 1 GBP. easyJet charges one fee - 1 GBP.

If you pay by Visa or Mastercard, you pay 3.50 GBP regardless of how much your tickets come to. With easyJet, you pay a flat fee of 4.95 GBP.

Near enough the same, really. Thankfully, TR, AK/FD, 3K, etc, some of the ones I have been using recently, don't charge anything to use a card - even if it is a credit card.

I have to say Im not a fan or FR but this time fair play to them and Its nice that they honoured the tickets. I called my sister last night and her neighbour works for FR and they have been told that it was an error and that they decided it would be good publicity for the company .

I haven't received an email conf. from them after 24 hours for the flights I booked.

Does anyone think they might slap on the taxes at check in, citing the new UK rules?

Having said that though, after booking I got the confirmation page which I PDF'd and does state "confirmed".

I called their line and it says that 'due to a high number of bookings we are experiencing a backlog of bookings' [paraphrasing a bit there].

Logging in to the site says confirmed too...

Anyone else...?
